Khatu Shyam Ji is a town of a little over eleven thousand residents in Sikar district, about 43 km from Sikar city and 17 km from Reengus. It matters because of one temple. Devotees worship Barbarika, a warrior of the Mahabharata and the grandson of Bhima, here as Shyam Baba, and a very large number of them come: families from Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat and Punjab, many on foot with flags at the time of the Falgun fair.
The tradition behind the shrine is that Barbarika offered his head to Krishna to honour a vow, and was blessed to be worshipped as Shyam in the present age. Local legend says a ruler named Roop Singh Chauhan was guided in a dream to the spot where the head lay buried, now marked by Shyam Kund beside the temple. The earliest literary mention is a short Braj Bhasha poem, the Shyam Pacchisi, dated to 1675. The present marble temple is much newer than the story, and how a visit feels depends heavily on the calendar.
On an ordinary weekday a visit takes a morning: shoes and phone at the counter, a queue that moves, darshan, a walk to Shyam Kund and the garden. On Ekadashi, weekends, New Year and the Falgun fair, the queues, traffic and temple closures change the whole plan. Treat those days as a different trip, and book accommodation early.
There is little else in the town itself, so most travellers pair Khatu with day trips across Sikar district: the hill shrine of Jeen Mata, the ruined Shiva temple at Harshnath, the fort town of Laxmangarh and the painted havelis of Nawalgarh. Salasar Balaji is farther away but is often added by pilgrims doing a circuit.

Reach early, ideally before the first rush, and leave bags, phones and cameras at the counter near the entrance. Join the general queue for darshan at the Shyam Baba temple, then walk to Shyam Kund, which sits close to the temple, and sit for a while. Visit Shyam Bagicha, the garden whose flowers are used in the shrine, and see the samadhi of the devotee Alu Singh inside it. Have an early vegetarian lunch near the temple, rest through the middle of the day and, if you can stay, return for the evening aarti when the temple is lit. On Ekadashi or a festival weekend, expect the same sequence to take much longer.
