1 day in Khatu Shyam Ji
- 01
Day 1: Darshan, kund and garden
Reach early, ideally before the first rush, and leave bags, phones and cameras at the counter near the entrance. Join the general queue for darshan at the Shyam Baba temple, then walk to Shyam Kund, which sits close to the temple, and sit for a while. Visit Shyam Bagicha, the garden whose flowers are used in the shrine, and see the samadhi of the devotee Alu Singh inside it. Have an early vegetarian lunch near the temple, rest through the middle of the day and, if you can stay, return for the evening aarti when the temple is lit. On Ekadashi or a festival weekend, expect the same sequence to take much longer.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Shyam Kund 20 to 40 minutes Easy Early morning, or just before the evening aarti; bathing crowds are largest during the Falgun fair Shyam Bagicha 20 to 30 minutes Easy Morning or late afternoon; avoid the midday heat Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Day 2: Hill shrines of Sikar district
Hire a car for the day. Visit Jeen Mata temple in the morning, when the hill is cooler, and Harshnath temple near Sikar, which is a good place for the late-afternoon view if you can manage the climb. Return to Khatu for the evening.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Jeen Mata Temple Half a day including travel Moderate Winter mornings; Navratri brings very large crowds Harshnath Temple 1 to 2 hours Demanding Early morning or late afternoon; winter months Pace: Harshnath Temple involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Jeen Mata Temple: A road reaches the hill complex, but the temple area involves steps and uneven ground. Allow extra time, wear flat shoes and expect crowds at Navratri.
With parents at Harshnath Temple: The climb is real and the temple stands on uneven ground in ruins. Older visitors may prefer to stay at lower levels and enjoy the view from there.

Day 3: Shekhawati forts and havelis
Drive to Laxmangarh to see the town fort, then on to Nawalgarh for the painted haveli museums. Many travellers end the trip at Nawalgarh and drive on towards Jaipur instead of returning to Khatu.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Khatu Shyam Ji trip for parents and children
- Go on a weekday and reach the temple early. Ekadashi, Sundays and the Falgun fair bring queues of several hours.
- Phones, cameras and bags are usually deposited at a counter before entry, so carry a small cloth bag with only the essentials and keep medicines and a water bottle accessible.
- Choose a hotel within walking distance with a lift. Lanes near the temple are crowded, and cars may not be allowed in on festival days.
- Do not pay anyone for a 'VIP' or faster darshan. The temple committee has publicly warned against this, so ask staff at the queue entrance if mobility is a concern.
- Wear comfortable footwear that is easy to slip off, because shoes are left outside. Floors can be hot at noon, so go early or in the evening.
- Carry the contact of your driver and agree a meeting point, as phones are left behind and crowds scatter groups.
