Why it matters

Why Nathon Town is worth your time

Nathon shows the Samui that existed before mass tourism, as a port and commercial centre. Several government offices remain here even though commercial activity has shifted east.

For most visitors, its main role is practical: it is where ferries from the mainland arrive. Understanding it helps with planning arrivals and departures. It is also where many everyday needs are met, such as pharmacies, phone shops and hardware, so a short visit can be more useful than a long one. Keep in mind that Nathon lies across the island from Chaweng, so allow extra time by road when planning arrivals.

How to experience it

Nathon is the main port, a commercial centre on the west coast of Ko Samui and the island's capital for many years. Passenger and car ferries run from here to the mainland.

Walk the waterfront, look at the pier and browse the local shops. You can pick up everyday items such as medicines or phone SIM cards here, and the prices are often lower than in tourist areas. The sunset is on the west coast, so late afternoon can be pleasant.

If you arrive by ferry, plan your onward transport in advance, as Nathon is across the island from Chaweng and takes some time by road.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check ferry times in advance
  • Allow time to cross the island
