Day 1: Hill, harbour and sunset
Start early at the Atkinson Clock Tower and, if the heat and your knees allow, walk the Signal Hill treetop trail. Have coffee on Gaya Street, then visit the Sabah Museum in the middle of the day while it is hottest. In the late afternoon, go to Tanjung Aru Beach to watch the sun set over the islands, with a light snack from the beach stalls.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Atkinson Clock Tower 20 to 30 minutes Moderate Morning, or late afternoon for softer light Sabah Museum 2 to 3 hours Moderate Midday, when the heat and showers are worst Tanjung Aru Beach 1 to 2 hours Easy Late afternoon to sunset Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Atkinson Clock Tower: The tower sits on a bluff reached by a short uphill walk, with few benches and little shade. Taking a taxi to the top and walking down is the easiest way.
With parents at Sabah Museum: The main galleries are air-conditioned with seating, but the site is on a slope with paths between buildings. Take a taxi to the main building and see the outdoor areas only if the weather is kind.

Day 1: Islands
Take a morning boat from Jesselton Point to Manukan or Mamutik in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Swim or snorkel in the shallows, lunch on the island and return by mid-afternoon to rest. In the evening, walk the waterfront and eat at a restaurant in the centre.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Tunku Abdul Rahman Park Half a day to a full day Moderate Morning departures in the drier months, roughly February to April Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park: Boarding speedboats from a jetty means steps and a rocking deck, and island paths are mostly short but sun-exposed. Choose Manukan, which has facilities and shade, and carry a hat and water.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Kota Kinabalu trip for parents and children
- Plan sightseeing in the morning, rest indoors from midday and use the rain break for the museum or a mall. Daytime highs are around 31 to 33 C all year and humidity is high.
- Use ride-hailing apps or taxis between areas, and agree the fare in advance if there is no meter. Keep your hotel's address saved in English and Malay.
- Island trips involve stepping between jetty and boat, so ask for help boarding, wear a life jacket and avoid sailing on rough days. Choose Manukan for facilities.
- Dress modestly at the City Mosque and other religious sites, with covered shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove shoes.
- Buy travel insurance that covers hospital care. Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the largest public hospital and KPJ Specialist Hospital the largest private one in the city, per Wikipedia; carry a medicine list and a copy of prescriptions.
- Carry water, a hat and an umbrella, and apply repellent at the Wetland Centre, Lok Kawi and the forest trails.
