The short answer
The Leela Kovalam and Halcyon Castle: what visitors should know first
A strong choice if you want comfort, quiet and some history, and the budget to match. It sits above the sea, away from the promenade, so you will use its restaurants and shuttles. Confirm room type, lifts and heritage-building access before you book.
History and context
The story behind The Leela Kovalam and Halcyon Castle
Halcyon Castle was built in 1932 by M.R. Sri Rama Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran, consort of Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi, as a retreat for the family. It was sold to the Government of India in 1964 and operated as a hotel by the India Tourism Development Corporation. In July 2017, custody passed to the RP Group in line with court orders.
The resort at the site operates as The Leela Kovalam, a Raviz Hotel; the Leela brand returned under a management agreement announced in 2022. Check the current name when booking, as branding has changed.

Why it matters
Why The Leela Kovalam and Halcyon Castle is worth your time
Halcyon Castle is the building that put Kovalam on the map. Built as a seaside retreat by the family of the Regent Maharani of Travancore, it brought the first attention to what had been a coconut-grove fishing coast, and later influenced the tourist development that followed.
The resort around it, designed by the architect Charles Correa and opened in 2005, uses the cliff setting to keep every room facing the sea. It is a useful base for travellers who value quiet and a sense of place over proximity to the promenade.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
The resort is arranged across a clifftop with views over the sea. If you are staying, spend the first morning exploring the property on foot or by buggy: the terraces, the pool, the access to the beach and the old palace. Halcyon Castle itself, now called the Kovalam Palace, is a two-storey building that blends Kerala roofs with European-style details, polished teak floors and coffered ceilings.
Dining and the spa are the main reasons to spend time on site. The resort offers an Ayurveda spa and multiple restaurants, so a slower, rest-focused stay works well. If you are visiting without staying, call ahead to ask whether a table or palace visit is possible.
For sightseeing, use the hotel's car or a taxi to reach the promenade, Vizhinjam and the cave temple. Ask the front desk about the best hours for beach access, and check whether the buggy service runs in the evening.

Before you book the room.
