Kovalam is a small stretch of south Kerala coast, about 15 km from the state capital, where rocky headlands divide the shore into separate bays. The name is usually translated as a grove of coconut palms, and the palms are still there. The place first drew attention in the late 1920s, when the Regent Maharani of Travancore built a seaside retreat, Halcyon Castle, on the cliff. It became a stop on the hippie trail in the 1970s and has been a beach resort for foreign and Indian visitors ever since.

The resort is made of three beaches. Lighthouse Beach, at the southern end, is the busiest, with the red and white Vizhinjam Lighthouse above it and a long promenade of cafes, shops and guesthouses. Hawa Beach (also called Eve's Beach) is the next bay along, with a more local feel and surf that suits slightly stronger swimmers and surfers. Samudra Beach, beyond a large headland, is the quietest, and is where fishermen still haul in their nets. Away from the sand, the old fishing town of Vizhinjam, a rock-cut cave temple of the eighth century and a cliff-top Shiva temple with a 58-foot statue give the stay some substance beyond sunbathing.

Kovalam suits families and older travellers who are comfortable with a slow, mostly flat holiday. The promenade and the lighthouse area are easy to reach by car, hotels range from simple guesthouses to a clifftop resort, and Ayurvedic massage and treatment centres are common. Be careful about the sea itself: currents can be strong, swimming is safe only in the areas marked by lifeguards, and the monsoon months from June to September and again in October change the picture entirely. Come between December and February and Kovalam is easy company.

1 day in Kovalam

Start early with a walk on Lighthouse Beach while the sand is cool and fishing boats are coming in. Rest through the midday heat. In the late afternoon, drive the short distance to Vizhinjam harbour to watch boats and the sea before sunset, and return for dinner at a beachfront restaurant with a fresh fish order.

Food to try in Kovalam

Food and restaurants

Kovalam's beachfront restaurants lean heavily on fresh seafood: catch of the day grilled, fried or cooked in a Kerala-style spiced masala, plus prawns, squid and the local favourite karimeen (pearl spot) when available. Alongside the seafood, you will find Kerala breakfast staples such as appam with stew, puttu with kadala curry and parotta with beef or vegetable curry, along with banana chips and strong tea. Many small restaurants near the Lighthouse Beach promenade also serve vegetarian thalis, and the larger hotels have dedicated Kerala and seafood restaurants.

Prices vary widely between the promenade cafes, simple local eateries a little inland and hotel restaurants, so look at menus before you sit down. Ask what is fresh that day and have fish weighed and priced before cooking. Choose busy places with a steady turnover, drink bottled or filtered water, and be cautious with raw salads. If you are on an Ayurvedic programme, the treatment centre will usually tell you which foods to avoid.

Shopping in Kovalam

Shopping

The beachfront at Lighthouse Beach has small shops selling beachwear, cotton clothes, spices, coconut-shell crafts, souvenirs and Kerala textiles. Prices are negotiable in most of them, so compare a few shops before buying. For better-quality crafts, visit the Kerala Arts and Crafts Village at Vellar, where studios sell items such as Aranmula kannadi (metal mirrors), Balaramapuram handloom cloth, Nettur boxes and coir and coconut-husk crafts at stated prices.

For Ayurvedic oils or products, buy from a registered centre or a government-approved outlet and ask for an itemised bill. Spices keep well and are easy to carry, but check packaging dates. Wooden and ivory-like carvings should come with documentation; avoid anything made from protected species.

Choose without overthinking

Which Kovalam experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Lighthouse Beach or Hawa Beach?

Choose Lighthouse Beach for convenience: it has the promenade, restaurants, the lighthouse and a lifeguard presence. Choose Hawa Beach for a calmer, more local walk, but be aware that the surf there can be a little stronger and swimming needs more care.

A resort stay or a promenade guesthouse?

A resort on the headlands gives you a pool, quiet and a spa, but you are further from the promenade and will pay resort prices for meals. A guesthouse on the promenade is cheaper and close to the sand, but is noisier and often has stairs.

Vizhinjam cave temple or Azhimala Shiva Temple?

Pick the cave temple if you are interested in early Kerala history and carving. Pick Azhimala if you want a living temple, a cliff view and the 58-foot Shiva statue. Both are short drives from Kovalam and can be combined in a morning.

Poovar backwaters or staying in Kovalam?

Poovar is a quieter half-day outing with boat rides and mangroves, best for those who want something other than beaches. If you have only two days, stay in Kovalam and see Vizhinjam; add Poovar only if you have a third day.

Know before you go

Kovalam travel tips

  1. 01

    Swimming

Swim only between the lifeguards' flags, which are posted on Lighthouse and Hawa beaches. Currents here can be strong, and the monsoon months make the sea unsafe. If a lifeguard waves you out, leave the water.

  2. 02

    Heat and sun

It is warm and humid all year, with highs mostly around 30-33°C. Sightsee early, rest after lunch, wear a hat and use high-factor sunscreen even on cloudy days.

  3. 03

    Getting around

The promenade is walkable. For Vizhinjam, Azhimala and Poovar, use a taxi or an auto and agree the fare and waiting time before you set off. Public buses run from the Kovalam stand toward the capital.

  4. 04

    Walking and steps

The lighthouse has a long spiral of steps, with a lift reported to cover most of the climb. The beaches have soft sand and some lanes are uneven, so closed shoes with grip suit older travellers better than flip-flops.

  5. 05

    Money

There are ATMs near Kovalam junction but daily limits can be low, so carry some cash for autos, small restaurants and temple donations. Cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.

  6. 06

    Dress and temples

Beachwear belongs on the beach. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting Azhimala or the cave temple; shoes come off at temple entrances, so carry socks if the stone is hot.

  7. 07

    Monsoon closures

Between June and October the sea is rough, some beachfront cafes shut and activities such as surfing for beginners may pause. Check conditions with your hotel before planning beach days.

  8. 08

    Ayurveda

Many centres offer massage and treatment. Choose a registered centre, ask for a doctor's consultation before a long programme and agree the price before you start.

Kovalam with elderly parents: what to know

  • Take the lighthouse early in the morning: the lift reportedly saves most of the climb, but the last flight is on steps and the upper platform is small.
  • Beach sand is soft and uneven; wear closed shoes or sandals with grip and walk on the firmer sand near the waterline rather than loose dunes.

Day trips from Kovalam

Useful answers

Kovalam FAQs

How many days are enough for Kovalam?

Two to three days is enough for the beaches, the lighthouse, Vizhinjam and a cliff temple. Add a day if you plan Ayurvedic treatment or a trip to the Poovar backwaters.

What is the best time to visit Kovalam?

December to February is the driest and most comfortable. November and March are workable, but April to May is hot and humid, and June to October brings heavy monsoon rain and rough seas.

Is Kovalam safe for swimming?

Only in the lifeguard-marked areas. Lifeguards are posted on Lighthouse and Hawa beaches and mark where it is unsafe, but currents can be strong. Heed the flags and avoid swimming in the monsoon.

Is Kovalam good for elderly parents?

Yes, in season and with planning. The promenade is flat and easy, but sand is soft and the lighthouse and temple visits involve steps. Choose a hotel with a lift and plan a rest in the afternoon.

How far is Kovalam from the airport and railway station?

Thiruvananthapuram airport is about 10-12 km away and Thiruvananthapuram Central station is about 13-16 km, so most visitors arrive by taxi or auto in under an hour.
