The short answer

Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour: what visitors should know first

Yes, for an early morning look at working Kerala. Go around dawn to see boats land and fish sorted, stay out of the way, and expect noise, smell and slippery ground. It is not a tourist show, so keep the visit short and respectful.

History and context

The story behind Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour

Vizhinjam was an important seaport in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and was the headquarters of the Ay kings in the eighth century. The Vizhinjam International Seaport, India's first deepwater transshipment port, began trial operations in 2024 and was formally inaugurated on 2 May 2025.

Why it matters

Why Vizhinjam Fishing Harbour is worth your time

The harbour is the reason Vizhinjam exists. For centuries it has been a natural, sheltered harbour, and fishing remains the main livelihood for many families on this coast. Seeing it at work gives context to the quieter beach scene in Kovalam.

It is also a place of change. A modern deepwater seaport has been built beside the fishing harbour, and the contrast between boats of wood and ships of steel is striking. Watching the harbour is a way to see how Kerala's coast is both traditional and changing.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Vizhinjam is one of the more important fish-landing centres on the Thiruvananthapuram coast, and fishing goes on here all year. Go at about 6 or 7 am, when boats arrive and the catch is auctioned on the sand. Larger fish are sold first, and smaller lots follow.

Stand at the edge and watch how the work flows: the unloading, sorting, icing and boxing. Traditional boats such as the vallam and the log catamaran share the water with larger craft. Be prepared for noise, smell and wet ground, and wear shoes you can wash.

Keep a respectful distance and ask before photographing people. If you want to buy fish, do it only if you can cook it or have a restaurant willing to prepare it. Combine the visit with the cave temple and the Marine Aquarium, both a few minutes away, then return for breakfast.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go around 6-7 am for the landings
  • Wear non-slip shoes you can wash
  • Ask before photographing people
  • Stay out of the way of vehicles
  • Combine with the cave temple and aquarium
