The short answer

Hawa Beach: what visitors should know first

Yes, as a walk rather than a destination: it is a calmer, more local counterpart to Lighthouse Beach. Come early to see fishermen set out, swim only where the lifeguards allow, and note that the surf can be stronger than at the next bay.

History and context

The story behind Hawa Beach

Hawa Beach is one of the beaches that grew into the Kovalam resort following the first beach retreat built here in the late 1920s. The beach's alternative name, Eve's Beach, reflects its early reputation among foreign visitors; the practice of sunbathing topless that gave rise to it has since been banned.

Why it matters

Why Hawa Beach is worth your time

Hawa Beach shows the other face of Kovalam: a stretch of sand where local life carries on beside the tourist trade. It is a good counterweight to the busier promenade and a useful option for those who prefer a quieter morning walk.

It also forms part of the Kovalam trio of crescent beaches, each with a different character, and is popular with surfers looking for slightly more challenging breaks. It is also the bay where lifeguard cover, local fishing and the surf come together in one short walk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Hawa Beach lies just beyond the rocks at the northern end of Lighthouse Beach, reachable on foot along the sand when the tide allows or by a short auto ride. Go in the first hour after sunrise. Fishermen are setting out or bringing in boats, and the light on the headland is soft.

Walk the length of the beach and sit in a cafe or on a rock to watch. Swimming is possible within the lifeguard-marked area, but the surf is slightly stronger here than at the first bay and the currents can be tricky, so stay within your depth and heed the flags.

Late afternoon is also pleasant, when the sunsets are visible from the sand. Keep in mind that there is less shade and fewer seats than on Lighthouse Beach, so carry water and a hat. The beach is also known as Eve's Beach, and you may hear both names used by autos and locals.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Swim only in lifeguard-marked areas
  • Carry water and shade, as facilities are limited
  • Check the surf before you enter
  • Keep valuables out of sight on the sand
  • Visit early or late to avoid midday heat
