The short answer

Vizhinjam Lighthouse: what visitors should know first

Worth doing if you can manage a long climb. A lift is reported to run to the 114th step, leaving about 30 steps, which makes it manageable for many people. Go early, check the current opening hours, and expect a small platform at the top.

History and context

The story behind Vizhinjam Lighthouse

The lighthouse was completed in 1972 and began functioning on 30 June 1972. Before that, a lighted beacon had been built at nearby Kolachal in 1925 and a day mark at Vizhinjam in 1960. The tower is 36 metres (118 feet) high, with red and white horizontal stripes and a red dome, and shows a flashing white light.

Why it matters

Why Vizhinjam Lighthouse is worth your time

The tower is the landmark that gave Lighthouse Beach its name and the first thing you see when you arrive. Its view over three bays shows how the coast is divided by headlands, and what the beach looks like beyond the promenade.

It is also still a working aid to navigation, maintained by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, in an area that was a busy seaport in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The three-bay view

From the top you can see how the headlands split Kovalam into separate bays and where each beach begins.

  2. 02

    Vizhinjam port

To the south you can see the harbour, and the deep-water seaport that opened in 2025.

  3. 03

    Evening light

Go an hour before sunset when the sea turns copper and the heat fades.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The lighthouse stands above the southern end of Lighthouse Beach, reached by a short lane from the promenade. Arrive when it opens, or about an hour before sunset when the light softens and the crowds are thinner. Queue for the lift if it is running and buy the ticket at the gate.

At the top, walk around the platform slowly and look in each direction. To the north, the three bays of Kovalam curve away with their palms and headlands; to the south, you will see the harbour and the large port at Vizhinjam; and seaward there is only blue. The view is the point, and it takes about ten minutes to take in.

Photography is the main activity. Hold on to your phone at the railings, and keep children close. Return via the beach rather than the road if the sand is firm; it is a good place to finish with a cold drink.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm timings and the current fee locally
  • Go early or an hour before sunset
  • Use the lift if it is running; expect about 30 steps after it
  • Hold phones and cameras firmly at the rail
  • Keep children close to the rail-less gaps
