History and context

Beypore likely corresponds to the classical port of Tyndis, which traded with the Roman Empire. Tipu Sultan named the settlement Sultan Pattanam.
Today it is the second biggest port in Kerala after Kochi, according to Wikipedia, and remains famous for uru shipbuilding.

Why it matters
Why Beypore is worth your time
Beypore ties Kozhikode to the wider Indian Ocean. It is believed to match the ancient port called Tyndis, which traded with the Roman world, and Tipu Sultan renamed it Sultan Pattanam. That long record shows why this coast mattered for centuries.
The living craft is the main reason to go. Uru ships are built by hand in a tradition that continues, and watching it gives a rare look at skills that have been passed down through generations. The writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer also lived here, a link to Malayalam literature.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive south from Kozhikode and allow about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. In the morning the yards are most active, and you can see wooden hulls under construction by carpenters using traditional methods. The uru is a large dhow-type ship, and boats built here have been supplied to buyers in the Arab world.
Walk to the pier, called Pulimuttu, a stone breakwater about a kilometre long that extends into the sea at the mouth of the Chaliyar river. A lighthouse and a beach are nearby. The walk is exposed and the stones are uneven, so go only if you are steady and the sea is calm.
Be careful about expectations. Beypore is a working port, not a tourist centre, so facilities are simple and access to the yards depends on goodwill. Ask your driver or hotel to arrange a visit, keep a respectful distance from the work, and combine it with Kadalundi or a seafood lunch.
