Kozhikode, long known in English as Calicut, is a city that makes sense of Kerala's history rather than decorating it. It was the capital of the Zamorins, whose kingdom grew into the region's dominant port by the 15th century, and Vasco da Gama's ships arrived on this coast in 1498. The traders, shipbuilders and sweet-makers who came for the spice business never quite left, which is why the city's mosques, temples, parsi fire temple and halwa shops sit so close together.
Visiting here is a matter of small, specific pleasures rather than one big monument. Walk the lanes of S. M. Street, known locally as Mittai Theruvu, the sweet street, and buy halwa by weight. Look at the timber architecture of Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira, which has no domes or minarets. Sit at the edge of Mananchira Square in the evening, then eat a Malabar biryani at one of the city's old restaurants. In 2023 UNESCO named Kozhikode India's first City of Literature, which fits a place with a public library, statues of Malayalam writers and a long habit of argument.
The city is easy for older travellers if you keep the plan modest. The main sights are close together, almost all of them level, and the climate is warm and humid all year, so the question is rain and heat rather than altitude. Kappad, Beypore, Kadalundi and the Thusharagiri waterfalls are half-day trips by road, and Wayanad's hills, which have their own page, are a longer excursion beyond the Thamarassery ghat road. Two or three days is a comfortable length of stay.
