Before you go

Kozhikode with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan the day around the heat: do S. M. Street and the museum in the morning, rest after lunch, and keep the beach for the last hour of daylight.
  • Most city sights are level, but check footwear: temples and mosques are entered barefoot and the ground can be hot or wet.
  • Between June and September, expect heavy rain and rough seas. Beypore pier, the beach and the waterfalls can be unsafe, so ask locally before you go.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and a guaranteed car drop-off; the old-city lanes are narrow and busy.
  • For day trips, hire a driver and plan one trip a day, with a seat and shade at each stop. Roads to Kappad and Thusharagiri involve long, winding drives.
  • Carry electrolyte drinks and bottled water, since humidity makes dehydration easy even on cloudy days.

Easiest first

Places in Kozhikode sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (7)

  • Kozhikode Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The promenade is paved and lit, and mostly level, with seats in places. There is little shade in the afternoon, and crowds build at weekends, so go on a weekday and keep valuables close. Avoid the water's edge in rough weather.
  • Mananchira Square (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — The paths are paved and level, with benches around the park and shade from trees. Public toilets can be basic, and the park fills up at weekends, so choose a weekday if you want quiet.
  • Mishkal Mosque (Places of worship · 30 to 60 minutes) — The lane and tank edge are level, but the mosque is entered barefoot, floors may be hot or wet, and seating is limited. The old quarter is crowded and traffic is heavy, so ask your driver to drop you close.
  • Paragon Restaurant (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Mostly level access at the main restaurant, but the dining room is busy and noisy. Ask for a quieter table, avoid peak hours, and tell staff about spice or dietary needs, as the food can be rich.
  • Pazhassi Raja Museum (Culture and craft · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Mostly level paths and ground-floor galleries in a bungalow setting, with shade in the grounds. Some rooms are small, and staff can advise on access, so ask at the entrance if steps are a concern.
  • S. M. Street (Mittai Theruvu) (Shopping · 1 to 2 hours) — The street is pedestrianised and level after its 2017 renovation, but it can be crowded and hot. Seating is limited, so plan a break at a nearby cafe, and keep an eye on your belongings.
  • Tali Shiva Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 60 minutes) — The precinct is mostly level, but temple floors are entered barefoot and can be hot or wet. The streets around are crowded, and seating is limited, so take a hat and water if you stay outside.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Beypore (Culture and craft · 3 to 4 hours including the drive) — Paths around the yards and the pier are uneven and exposed, with little shade. The pier is a long walk over stones, so skip it if you have mobility issues, and avoid it in rough seas.
  • Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Viewing is often from boats or uneven riverbank paths, with little shade or seating. Getting in and out of boats can be difficult for people with limited mobility, so check conditions locally.
  • Kappad Beach (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the drive) — The shore is uneven and rocky in places, so wear closed shoes and take care near the water. A paved walkway and seating areas exist, and the beach has toilets and restaurants, but there is little shade at midday.
  • Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Full day including the drive) — The drive is long and winding, but the lakeside area near Peruvannamuzhi is mostly level. Forest treks are uneven and not suited to anyone with limited stamina, and facilities inside the forest are minimal. Ask about the boat before you commit.
  • Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village (Culture and craft · 2 to 3 hours plus travel) — Paths are mostly level but spread over a large site with limited shade. Cottages and stalls are close together, so take your time. Check for seating and toilets on arrival.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Thusharagiri Falls (Places to visit · Full day including the drive) — The road is long and winding and the paths to the falls involve uneven ground and steps. Seating and shade are limited, so older travellers should consider viewing only the nearer sections.

Practical tips for Kozhikode

  • Humidity and heat. The city is warm and humid year-round, with mean highs around 30 to 34 degrees. Plan outdoor sights for early morning or late afternoon and carry water.
  • Monsoon. June to August brings very heavy rain. Beach, Beypore pier and waterfall visits can be unsafe or closed then, so confirm locally and keep indoor options.
  • Dress at religious sites. Dress modestly everywhere. Temples and mosques are entered barefoot; Tali temple requires traditional dress such as a mundu or veshti, which can be rented nearby.
  • Getting around. Autorickshaws are the practical option in the city, and app cabs work for longer trips. Agree a fare or insist on the meter, and hire a car with driver for day trips.
  • Money. ATMs are common around the centre. Carry small notes for autos, stall snacks and temple offerings, and keep some cash for places that do not take cards.
  • Food and water. Eat at busy places with high turnover, drink bottled or filtered water, and ask for less spice or less chilli if needed. Seafood is best eaten fresh and hot.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing worshippers and inside religious buildings. Photography rules at temples and the museum differ, so follow signs and staff directions.
  • Airport note. Calicut's runway is a tabletop type, and flights can be delayed or diverted in heavy monsoon weather, so keep slack in your schedule if you are flying out during rain.
