Plan 01

1 day in Kozhikode

  1. 01

Day 1: Sweet street, old mosque and the sea

Start in the old quarter with a walk along S. M. Street while the shops are opening, and buy a small packet of halwa. Take an auto to Kuttichira to see the exterior of Mishkal Mosque and its tank, then return to the Tali area, where non-Hindu visitors can see the temple's outer surroundings. Have a long Malabar lunch and rest. In the afternoon, spend an hour at Mananchira Square, then end at Kozhikode Beach for the sunset and a snack from the stalls.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
    S. M. Street (Mittai Theruvu)1 to 2 hoursEasyMorning; avoid festival rush and monsoon downpours
Mishkal Mosque30 to 60 minutesEasyMorning, outside prayer times and avoiding the monsoon
Mananchira Square45 to 90 minutesEasyLate afternoon and early evening; avoid the midday heat and heavy rain
Kozhikode Beach1 to 2 hoursEasyAn hour before sunset, November to February; avoid June to August

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 02

2 days in Kozhikode

  1. 01

    Day 1: The old city

Begin with S. M. Street and its halwa shops, then go to Kuttichira for Mishkal Mosque. Stop at the Tali area for the temple precinct, and eat a leisurely biryani lunch at a long-running restaurant such as Paragon. After a rest, walk around Mananchira Square and finish at the beach.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Beypore and the coast

Drive south to Beypore in the morning to see the wooden uru boatyards, the port and the long stone pier if the sea is calm. Return for lunch, then visit the Pazhassi Raja Museum on East Hill in the cooler part of the afternoon (check the closed day). Keep the evening free for the beach or a quiet meal.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Beypore3 to 4 hours including the driveModerateMorning, November to February; avoid the monsoon
Pazhassi Raja Museum1 to 1.5 hoursEasyWeekday mornings, outside the midday closure

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Beypore: Paths around the yards and the pier are uneven and exposed, with little shade. The pier is a long walk over stones, so skip it if you have mobility issues, and avoid it in rough seas.

Plan 03

3 days in Kozhikode

  1. 01

Day 1: Old city on foot

Walk S. M. Street early, then visit Kuttichira and Mishkal Mosque. Have lunch near Tali, rest, and spend the late afternoon at Mananchira Square before the sea-front at sunset.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Kappad and the north

Drive north to Kappad Beach in the morning, see the Vasco da Gama memorial and walk the rocky shore. On the return, you can stop at a seafood lunch spot. In the afternoon, visit the Pazhassi Raja Museum if it is open.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kappad Beach2 to 3 hours including the driveModerateMorning or late afternoon, November to February
Pazhassi Raja Museum1 to 1.5 hoursEasyWeekday mornings, outside the midday closure

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kappad Beach: The shore is uneven and rocky in places, so wear closed shoes and take care near the water. A paved walkway and seating areas exist, and the beach has toilets and restaurants, but there is little shade at midday.

  3. 03

Day 3: Beypore, Kadalundi or the hills

Choose one: Beypore's uru yards and port in the morning with Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary for a late-afternoon visit, or a longer day to the Thusharagiri waterfalls in the Western Ghats foothills, best outside the heavy monsoon. Both are road journeys of an hour or more each way.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Beypore3 to 4 hours including the driveModerateMorning, November to February; avoid the monsoon
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary2 to 3 hoursModerateEarly morning or late afternoon, in the cooler dry months

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Beypore: Paths around the yards and the pier are uneven and exposed, with little shade. The pier is a long walk over stones, so skip it if you have mobility issues, and avoid it in rough seas.

With parents at Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary: Viewing is often from boats or uneven riverbank paths, with little shade or seating. Getting in and out of boats can be difficult for people with limited mobility, so check conditions locally.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kozhikode trip for parents and children

  • Plan the day around the heat: do S. M. Street and the museum in the morning, rest after lunch, and keep the beach for the last hour of daylight.
  • Most city sights are level, but check footwear: temples and mosques are entered barefoot and the ground can be hot or wet.
  • Between June and September, expect heavy rain and rough seas. Beypore pier, the beach and the waterfalls can be unsafe, so ask locally before you go.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift and a guaranteed car drop-off; the old-city lanes are narrow and busy.
  • For day trips, hire a driver and plan one trip a day, with a seat and shade at each stop. Roads to Kappad and Thusharagiri involve long, winding drives.
  • Carry electrolyte drinks and bottled water, since humidity makes dehydration easy even on cloudy days.
