Why it matters

Why Sargaalaya Arts and Crafts Village is worth your time

Sargaalaya is a rare place where craft practice and sales happen together. It was set up by the Kerala Tourism Department to conserve traditional crafts and support artisans, and it is managed by a local labour contract co-operative society. That makes it more than a souvenir stop.

For visitors it offers context on Kerala's craft traditions, which often get lost in city shops. Seeing the work in progress helps you judge what is genuine and what is mass-produced, and buying directly supports the makers.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Go in the morning and allow a few hours. The village is laid out as a cluster of cottage-style stalls where artisans work and sell, so you can watch craft-making rather than only buying finished goods. Expect a range of Kerala crafts, and ask artisans about materials and prices before buying.

The site also offers recreational boating on the Kuttiady river and houses a crafts design and technology centre that trains people in the skills. If the weather is good, a short boat ride is a pleasant break. Check whether boating is running on the day.

If you visit in winter, the Sargaalaya International Arts and Crafts Festival runs from late December into January and attracts many artisans and visitors. It is lively but crowded, so go early. Plan the journey with a driver, and pair the visit with Kappad on the same route.
