Why it matters

Why Government Museum, Krishnagiri is worth your time

Krishnagiri sits on an old route between the Mysore plateau and the Tamil plains, and the museum is where that long history is gathered under one roof. The hero stones, which commemorate local fighters, are a distinctly Tamil and Kannada border-country tradition.

The museum opened in 1993 as the twelfth district museum in the state. It is small, but it is the most direct way to understand the megaliths and forts you will see in the countryside, including the dolmens near Mallachandram.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Hero stones

Memorial stones from the tenth century onward show how local warriors were remembered.

  2. 02

    Fort photographs and cannon

Two eighteenth-century cannon and photographs of district forts prepare you for the hills.

  3. 03

    Tribal displays

Exhibits on Lambadi, Irula and Kurumba life show the district's living cultures.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat the museum as a primer. Begin with the archaeology rooms, where Paleolithic, Neolithic and megalithic tools and pottery set out the district's long human history. Then look for the hero stones and inscriptions from the Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara periods, collected from villages across the district.

The art and culture rooms hold stone sculptures, wood carvings from temple cars, terracotta figures, palm-leaf manuscripts and displays on the Lambadi, Irula and Kurumba communities. The weapons section includes two eighteenth-century cannon and photographs of local forts, a good preview before you climb Krishnagiri or Rayakottai.

The science sections are modest, so skim them unless you have children with you. Photography rules vary, so ask the staff at the entrance.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check it is not a Friday or second Saturday
  • Go before 4.30 pm to have time
  • Ask staff about photography
  • Combine with a fort or dam visit
