The short answer

Krishnagiri Dam (KRP Dam): what visitors should know first

Go for a slow evening or morning walk, lawns and a picnic; do not expect a major sight. It is level, short and suits children and older relatives. Check the water level, as the reservoir can look low in dry months.

History and context

The story behind Krishnagiri Dam (KRP Dam)

The dam is on the Thenpennai river near Dhuduganahalli and is usually dated to the late 1950s. Sources give slightly different completion dates between 1957 and 1958, so treat the year as approximate. It was opened by the then Chief Minister, K. Kamaraj.

Why it matters

Why Krishnagiri Dam (KRP Dam) is worth your time

The Krishnagiri Reservoir Project, on the Thenpennai river, was built in the 1950s and supplies irrigation water to the surrounding farmland. It is the best-known leisure spot in the district and a good picture of everyday Krishnagiri life.

It matters also as a reminder that dams in this region need careful management: a shutter breach in November 2017 was widely reported as a dam-safety warning. For visitors it is an easy way to see how the district's water and farming are linked.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The lawns and fountains

Wide lawns, flower beds and fountains make the park good for a slow walk.

  2. 02

    The reservoir view

From the dam wall you see the long reservoir with hills behind it.

  3. 03

    Aadiperukku

A local festival in the Aadi month draws very large crowds to the park.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out in the late afternoon and enter the park at the dam end. Walk the lawns and the jogging route, and take your time at the fountains and flower beds, which are the main facilities. Children will head straight for the play equipment.

Walk to the dam wall for the view of the reservoir if you can manage the steps; otherwise, the lawn gives a decent view. The park has no major cafe, so carry water and snacks.

The dam also draws large local crowds at the Aadiperukku festival in the Tamil month of Aadi (roughly July–August), when it becomes very busy. If you prefer quiet, avoid that day and weekends.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go late afternoon and check closing time
  • Carry water and snacks
  • Avoid festival days if you want quiet
  • Skip the dam wall steps if mobility is limited
