Krishnagiri sits at the foot of a granite hill on the highway between Bengaluru and Salem, about 525 m above sea level. It is the headquarters of a district that was split from Dharmapuri in 2004, and it is known across Tamil Nadu for its mangoes. Most travellers pass through on the way elsewhere; a day or two here suits people who like ruins, hills and low-key towns.
The town is named after the hill and fort above it, which belonged to the old Baramahal group of strongholds that passed between Vijayanagara-era chiefs, the rulers of Mysore and the British. The climb to the fort is short but uneven, and the view from the top explains the landscape better than any signboard. Rayakottai, about 30 km away, has a similar hill fort with a stepped trail and a documented capture in 1791.
For gentler outings there is the Krishnagiri Dam park on the Thenpennai river, a small district museum with hero stones and megalithic pottery, and Hosur to the north with its old Shiva temple. Facilities are those of a working district town, not a resort, so plan meals, rests and drivers in advance. Winter mornings are the best time for anything involving a hill.
