Key hubs

Kuching airport and railway station

Airport
Kuching International Airport (KCH), about 11 km south of the centre; ride-hailing, taxi coupons and buses serve it. We found no direct flights from Indian cities, so most travellers connect via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.
Railway station
There is no passenger railway station in Kuching that we could verify. Plan to arrive by air, and use road transport locally.
Getting around
Grab and Maxim ride-hailing, metered taxis (agree a fare first), flat-fare local buses, free city buses on some routes, and river tambang boats across the Sarawak River

How to reach Kuching by air

Kuching International Airport (KCH) is about 11 km south of the centre, a short road transfer by Grab, taxi or bus. We found no direct flights from Indian cities listed; most travellers connect through Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Check current schedules for AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Scoot.

How to reach Kuching by train

Kuching has no passenger railway station that we could verify, so rail is not a way to arrive. A planned urban rail line is mentioned for the future, with no opening date we could confirm. Plan to arrive by air.

How to reach Kuching by road

Roads link Kuching to Bako, Semenggoh, Santubong and the western parks, and long-distance buses serve other Sarawak towns. For day trips, a hired taxi with a waiting fee is easier than relying on ride-hailing returns.

Getting around Kuching

Use Grab or Maxim, or agree a taxi fare first. Small tambang boats cross the Sarawak River, and flat-fare local buses and free city buses run on fixed routes. The old town is compact enough to walk in cooler hours.

Easy transfers to and in Kuching

  • Carry travel insurance. Sarawak General Hospital is the state's largest general hospital, with emergency care, and private hospitals exist; ask your hotel for the nearest.
  • Agree taxi fares or use Grab; rural returns from Semenggoh and Santubong can be hard to find, so ask your driver to wait.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
