Plan 01

1 day in Kuching

  1. 01

Day 1: Waterfront, old town and the north bank

Start early with a walk along the Kuching Waterfront and Main Bazaar, then visit Tua Pek Kong Temple. Take a riverboat across to the Astana gardens and Fort Margherita while it is still morning. Return for a long lunch and a rest in air-conditioning, then spend the afternoon at the Borneo Cultures Museum. Finish with sunset on the waterfront.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kuching Waterfront1 to 2 hoursEasyEarly morning or sunset
Main Bazaar1 to 2 hoursEasyMorning, before shops get busy
Tua Pek Kong Temple20 to 30 minutesEasyMorning
The Astana30 to 60 minutesEasyLate afternoon from the waterfront
Fort Margherita1 to 1.5 hoursModerateMorning, before the heat
Borneo Cultures Museum2 to 3 hoursEasyMorning, or a rainy afternoon

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Fort Margherita: The fort stands on a rise with a walk and steps up to the entrance and inside. Take it slowly in the heat; carry water and use shaded points to rest.

Plan 02

2 days in Kuching

  1. 01

Day 1: Old town and north bank

Walk the waterfront and Main Bazaar, visit Tua Pek Kong Temple and cross to the Astana and Fort Margherita by boat. After lunch, see the Borneo Cultures Museum. Take the Kuching City Mosque exterior on the way back if time allows.

  2. 02

Day 2: Orangutans and a cultural overview

Go to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre for the morning feeding, then return for lunch. In the afternoon visit the Sarawak Cultural Village at Damai, or if it is a weekend morning, swap Semenggoh for the Satok Sunday Market and spend the afternoon at the museum.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Semenggoh Wildlife CentreHalf day including travelModerateMorning feeding session
    Sarawak Cultural VillageHalf dayModerateMorning

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre: A short, partly uneven walk from the entrance to the feeding area in forest humidity. Take water and wear grip shoes; the shade helps but the trail has roots and slopes.

With parents at Sarawak Cultural Village: Paths link the houses across a hillside site, with some slopes and steps. Shaded and partly covered, but humid; take water and rest at the performance hall.

Plan 03

3 days in Kuching

  1. 01

Day 1: Old town on foot

Waterfront, Main Bazaar, Tua Pek Kong Temple, the exterior of the City Mosque and an evening on the promenade. Keep the pace slow and rest at midday.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Main Bazaar1 to 2 hoursEasyMorning, before shops get busy
Tua Pek Kong Temple20 to 30 minutesEasyMorning

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Brooke history and museums

Cross to the Astana gardens and Fort Margherita in the morning, then visit the Cat Museum at Petra Jaya if you have children. After lunch, spend the afternoon indoors at the Borneo Cultures Museum.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
The Astana30 to 60 minutesEasyLate afternoon from the waterfront

  3. 03

    Day 3: Wildlife day trip

Choose Semenggoh for a short, easier wildlife morning, or Bako National Park for a full day if everyone is fit. Add the Sarawak Cultural Village only if you have energy left. On a weekend, visit the Satok market instead of a second day trip.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Bako National ParkFull dayDemandingEarly morning, outside heavy rain
    Sarawak Cultural VillageHalf dayModerateMorning

Pace: Bako National Park involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Bako National Park: Access is by a small open boat from the village, with steps and a wet landing, and the trails are uneven. Older visitors can stay near the landing and short trails or skip it.

With parents at Sarawak Cultural Village: Paths link the houses across a hillside site, with some slopes and steps. Shaded and partly covered, but humid; take water and rest at the performance hall.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kuching trip for parents and children

  • Do outdoor sights before 11 am, then rest in air-conditioning. Heat and humidity are constant, and sudden rain is common in every month.
  • The Kuching Waterfront is level and easy. Boat crossings to the Astana and Fort Margherita involve a step down into a small boat, so take a hand and agree the fare first.
  • Bako National Park is demanding because of the boat landing and uneven trails. Semenggoh is a gentler wildlife option with a short forest walk.
  • Carry travel insurance. Sarawak General Hospital is the state's largest general hospital, with emergency care, and private hospitals exist; ask your hotel for the nearest.
  • Agree taxi fares or use Grab; rural returns from Semenggoh and Santubong can be hard to find, so ask your driver to wait.
  • Wear non-slip shoes for markets, fish stalls and wet park trails.
