Area by area

Kuching neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Waterfront and old town

Best for: First-time visitors who want to walk to the main sights

Good to know: Close to Main Bazaar, Tua Pek Kong Temple and the promenade, with riverboats to the north bank. Expect evening noise and narrow pavements; ask for a lift or low floor.

  2. 02

    Padungan and Jalan Song area

Best for: Food-focused travellers and those who like cafes

Good to know: A lively street of shophouses and restaurants a short ride from the waterfront. Good for variety, but you will need a taxi for most sights.

  3. 03

    Petra Jaya (north bank)

Best for: Travellers combining the Astana, fort and Cat Museum

Good to know: Quieter and greener, near the State Legislative Assembly building. Fewer restaurants, so plan meals ahead.

Sights in this area: Fort Margherita, Kuching Cat Museum, The Astana

  4. 04

    Satok and 3rd Mile

Best for: Weekend market visitors and families wanting malls and larger hotels

Good to know: More modern hotels and shopping centres within a short ride of the centre; the walk to old town sights is longer.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
