Kuta has food for every budget: Indonesian warungs, Western cafés, beach bars and international chains in the malls. Local dishes such as nasi campur and satay are easy to find, but many warungs use shrimp paste, fish sauce, egg or meat stock, so strict vegetarians should ask in advance. Poppies Restaurant, open since 1973, is the best-known heritage meal and serves Indonesian and international dishes with a vegetarian-friendly menu.

For vegetarian, Jain and Indian food, Kuta is better served than most of Bali. Directory listings and booking sites describe several pure vegetarian Indian restaurants around Jalan Kartika Plaza and Jalan Raya Kuta, including Ayodhya, Sattvik By Nature, Vinayak at Lippo Mall Kuta and Vrindavan, some with Jain menus or thalis. Gateway of India on Jalan Pantai Kuta serves mixed Indian food and says it cooks Jain dishes. For vegan meals, Sauce Tree is an all-vegan cafe. Every one of these should be confirmed by phone before you go, since hours and ownership change. Water: drink bottled water and avoid ice from uncertain sources.

Menus and kitchens change. If you follow a strict diet or have an allergy, confirm with the restaurant before you order.
