Why it matters
Why Chungthang is worth your time
Chungthang is the hinge of North Sikkim. The Lachen and Lachung rivers meet here to form the Teesta, and the town is the stopping point before the high-altitude areas of Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang.
The Lachen road from here crosses the Taram Chu on a replacement bridge that opened in early 2026 after the 2023 flood, where only one vehicle crosses at a time. That makes Chungthang a good place to check road conditions with your driver before continuing.

How to experience it
Chungthang is where the road splits, left for Lachen and right for Lachung. It is the point where the Lachen and Lachung rivers join to form the Teesta. Most visitors stop here for a break, a snack or a permit check.
Take the opportunity to stretch your legs and drink water before the climb. The altitude is lower here, around 1,700 m, and many people find it a good place to rest.
The town has a Sikh gurdwara, and the Indian Army has a major base here. Be respectful around military areas and do not photograph checkpoints.
