Lachen is a small village in Mangan district, North Sikkim, close to the Tibetan border. The name means 'big pass'. Most visitors know it as a halt rather than a destination: you sleep here to acclimatise, then leave before dawn for Gurudongmar Lake, or drive up to Thangu and Chopta Valley. That undersells it. The old timber houses, the Nyingma monastery on the slope above and the self-governing Dzumsa system that still runs village affairs make an evening here worth taking slowly.
The village stands at about 2,750 m near where the Lachen river runs down to join the Lachung river at Chungthang, forming the Teesta. Sources differ on the exact height, so treat figures from 2,600 to 2,900 m as approximate. The population is mainly Bhutia and Tibetan, and Lachen is run by the Dzumsa, a traditional council headed by elected Pipons. Tourism is the main source of income, concentrated from spring into early summer and again from October.
Getting here takes planning. The road from Gangtok is about 120 to 130 km and normally takes around six hours, climbing through Mangan and Chungthang. North Sikkim is a protected border area, so visitors need permits arranged through a registered operator or the district administration, and self-drive is generally not possible. The road washed away in the 2023 glacial lake outburst flood and a replacement single-lane bridge at Taram Chu reopened the route in early 2026. Conditions can still change, so confirm road status with your operator before you commit.
For families and older travellers, the honest summary is this. Lachen itself, at about 9,000 ft, is manageable for most people with a rest day. Gurudongmar, at around 17,000 ft, is a different matter: it is cold, thin-aired and reached after a very early start. Decide with a doctor before booking, and treat Chopta Valley, Thangu and the monastery as perfectly good trips in their own right.

Lachen itinerary
One good day
1 day from Lachen
This only works if you slept in Lachen the night before. Leave very early, usually well before dawn, so you can reach the lake in the morning; check the current entry cut-off time with your operator on the day. Stop at Thangu for tea or breakfast, continue past the army checkpoint to the lake, spend a short time there (30 to 45 minutes is the commonly advised limit at this altitude), then return to Lachen for rest. If you have heart, lung or blood-pressure concerns, swap the lake for Thangu and Chopta Valley, which are much lower.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Lachen
Drive north from Gangtok through Mangan and Chungthang; allow about six hours plus stops. Check in, drink water, rest and walk gently around the village. Visit Lachen Monastery on the slope above the village if time and light allow, and go to bed early.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days in Lachen
Drive up from Gangtok, check in, rest and take a short walk through the village. Visit the monastery at a gentle pace and keep dinner light. The aim today is acclimatisation, not sightseeing.
