Before you go

Lachen with elderly parents: what to know

  • Sleep at least one night in Lachen before going to Gurudongmar. Altitude affects fit people too, and a night at about 9,000 ft helps.
  • Talk to a doctor before booking, especially with heart, lung, blood pressure or diabetes concerns. Ask whether altitude medicine is suitable; do not start it without advice.
  • Keep your time at Gurudongmar short, walk slowly and drink water. Turn back or descend if you get a severe headache, nausea or confusion.
  • Pack warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and sun protection. It is cold even in spring and autumn, and the wind rises later in the day.
  • Choose Thangu and Chopta Valley instead of Gurudongmar if the height worries you. They are lower, quieter and still dramatic.
  • Carry water, light snacks and regular medicines in your day bag; facilities on the road are minimal and there are no public toilets at Chopta.

Easiest first

Places in Lachen sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • The Lachen to Thangu drive (Places to visit · About 1.5 hours each way, plus stops) — Almost no walking, but the road is narrow, winding and sometimes rough, which can be tiring, and motion sickness is common. Sit in front if prone to it.
  • Women's Handicraft Centre (Shopping · 30-45 minutes) — It is in the village centre on the main road, so walking is short and mostly level. Seating is not guaranteed.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Chopta Valley (Places to visit · Half a day with Thangu; about 2 hours from Lachen each way) — Much of it can be seen from the vehicle, but the final track is rough and bumpy. At about 13,000 ft the air is thin and cold. There are no cafés or public toilets at the valley itself, so go prepared.
  • Lachen Monastery (Places of worship · 45-60 minutes) — A short uphill walk of about 20 minutes from the village according to one guide, with a vehicle option for some. There are steps in the compound. At about 2,750 m, go slowly.
  • Lachen village and the Dzumsa (Culture and craft · 1-2 hours) — The village is on sloping ground at about 2,750 m, with uneven paths and few benches. Take it slowly and rest often. The main road is easier than the side lanes.
  • Thangu Valley (Places to visit · Half an hour as a stop; 1.5 hours each way from Lachen, or a half day with Chopta Valley) — The valley is gently rolling and the stop is short, but it is high and cold, with wind. Walk slowly and keep warm. Stay in Lachen rather than Thangu if you can, since sources say Thangu stays are few and basic.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Green Lake Trek (Kangchenjunga North Base Camp) (Places to visit · About 10 to 12 days from Gangtok, with roughly 8 days on foot) — A remote high-altitude trek to about 5,000 m, with long days on rough moraine, cold camps and no rescue nearby. Older travellers should not attempt it. Parents can stay in Lachen, see the village and monastery, and take the permitted drives in North Sikkim while fitter family members trek, if the trek permit is granted.
  • Gurudongmar Lake (Places to visit · Full day: roughly 4 hours each way from Lachen, plus 30 to 45 minutes at the lake) — The walking is short and mostly level from the car park, but the altitude is the problem: thin air, strong cold wind and a long rough drive. Anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure issues should take medical advice first. Portable oxygen in the vehicle is sensible; ask your operator.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Lachen

  • Altitude. Lachen is at about 9,000 ft, Thangu around 13,000 ft and Gurudongmar about 17,000 ft. Move slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and descend if you feel seriously unwell. Ask a doctor in advance about medicines.
  • Permits. Ask your registered operator for the current rules on permits, documents and minimum stay. Carry original ID and photocopies, and expect checkpoints along the road.
  • Early starts. Gurudongmar trips leave in the early hours, and entry cut-off times have varied. Confirm the current cut-off with your operator and do not plan to arrive late.
  • Road conditions. The Chungthang–Lachen road has a single-lane bridge at Taram Chu where only one vehicle crosses at a time. Landslides and weather can still close sections, so keep a buffer day.
  • Cold and clothing. Pack layers, a windproof outer layer, gloves, a woollen hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Temperatures drop quickly after dark, even in the best months.
  • Money. Carry enough cash from Gangtok. Only two bank branches are recorded in Lachen, and cards and UPI are not dependable.
  • Photography. Ask before photographing residents, homes or farms. Respect rules on photography at checkpoints and near army posts, and ask before photographing inside monasteries.
  • Health supplies. Bring regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit, water and snacks. Facilities along the road are minimal and there are no public toilets at Chopta.
