Thangu Valley: what visitors should know first
Worth a stop and a slow look, whether or not you continue to the lake. It is lower than Gurudongmar but still high, around 13,000 ft or more, so go slowly. Stay in Lachen rather than Thangu if you can.

Why it matters
Why Thangu Valley is worth your time
Thangu marks the transition from the Himalayan valleys of North Sikkim to the cold, dry country of the Tibetan plateau. The landscape changes within a few kilometres: forest, shrubs, grass and then bare slopes. It is the last settlement of any kind on the road to Gurudongmar and the gateway to Chopta Valley.
It matters for planning, too. Many guides treat it as the point at which to judge how you feel. If anyone has a headache or breathlessness here, turn back; it is far easier to descend from Thangu than from the lake.

How to experience it
Thangu is the point at which Lachen's forested valley gives way to open, high country. The drive from Lachen takes about 1.5 hours, rising steadily past tree line into grass, shrub and stone. Most vehicles stop here for breakfast or tea before the road continues to Gurudongmar or turns off for Chopta Valley.
Take the stop slowly. A short walk along the road lets you see yaks grazing, streams braided across the valley floor and snow peaks beyond. Altitude is noticeable here for many people, so move calmly, drink water and add layers; temperatures stay low even in summer.
If you are not going to the lake, Thangu is a good halfway destination, and it pairs naturally with Chopta Valley. Accommodation is limited and basic, and most travellers return to Lachen to sleep.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Carry warm layers; wind chills fast
- Judge how everyone feels before going higher
- Carry your permits and ID for checks
- Do not rely on public facilities
