The short answer
Chopta Valley: what visitors should know first
A good choice if Gurudongmar is too much, or if you are a foreign visitor with the right permit. It is high, at about 13,000 ft, and cold, but much lower than the lake. Go in the morning, in spring or autumn, and carry supplies.

Why it matters
Why Chopta Valley is worth your time
Chopta Valley gives visitors a taste of high Himalayan country without the severity of Gurudongmar. It is lower, quieter and, according to sources, open to foreign visitors who cannot go to the lake, so it is often the main high-altitude destination for non-Indian travellers in the area.
It also shows how seasonal this landscape is: barren and stony for most of the year, then briefly in flower in spring. The valley is also reached on a rough track, which keeps numbers down and means you should go with a driver who knows the road.

How to experience it
Chopta Valley is reached by a turn off the main road near Thangu, followed by a rough mud track in a jeep or SUV. The valley is a wide, open space with a river, bare slopes and a view of surrounding peaks. For most of the year it looks stark and brown; in spring, primulas, rhododendrons and other wildflowers appear.
Spend an hour or two walking slowly along the track or near the water. The valley is quiet. Many visitors see few other people there, even in busy seasons.
As there is no accommodation and no cafes or public toilets at the valley, stock up at Thangu and take water, snacks and layers. The monsoon (mid-June to September) makes the track slippery and risky, so avoid it then.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Take water, snacks and layers from Thangu
- Go with a driver used to the mud track
- Avoid the monsoon months
- Confirm foreign-visitor rules with a licensed operator
