How to reach Lakshadweep by air

Agatti Airport (AGX) is the only airport in Lakshadweep, with flights from Kochi (COK) of about 1.5 hours. From Agatti, you continue by boat or helicopter to other islands.

How to reach Lakshadweep by train

There is no railway on the islands. The nearest railheads are Ernakulam Junction (ERS) and Ernakulam Town (ERN) in Kochi, which is also the main port for passenger ships.

How to reach Lakshadweep by road

There are no road links to the mainland. Passenger ships run between Kochi and the islands, taking roughly 14 to 20 hours depending on the island. On the islands, roads are short and little used.

Getting around Lakshadweep

Between islands, boats and helicopters link Agatti with Kavaratti, Kadmat, Bangaram and Thinnakara. On islands you walk or cycle. Transfers depend on weather, so keep spare days.

Easy transfers to and in Lakshadweep

  • Check the boat transfer before you book. Stepping from jetty to small boat is the hardest moment for older travellers, so ask about assistance or helicopter options.
  • Carry regular medicines and a printed prescription. Medical facilities on the smaller islands are limited, and the nearest major hospitals are on the mainland.
  • Keep a buffer day at both ends of your trip. Flights, boats and helicopters depend on weather, and the monsoon can delay or stop sea travel.
  • Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees in settlements, and carry a scarf for mosque visits.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
