Before you go

Lakshadweep with elderly parents: what to know

  • Check the boat transfer before you book. Stepping from jetty to small boat is the hardest moment for older travellers, so ask about assistance or helicopter options.
  • Carry regular medicines and a printed prescription. Medical facilities on the smaller islands are limited, and the nearest major hospitals are on the mainland.
  • Plan outdoor time for early morning and late afternoon. Humidity stays high all year, and midday sun on a lagoon is stronger than it feels.
  • Glass-bottom boats and shallow lagoon wading let non-swimmers see the reef without effort. Scuba diving needs a medical certificate and a minimum age of 14.
  • Keep a buffer day at both ends of your trip. Flights, boats and helicopters depend on weather, and the monsoon can delay or stop sea travel.
  • Dress modestly, cover shoulders and knees in settlements, and carry a scarf for mosque visits.

Easiest first

Places in Lakshadweep sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (9)

  • Agatti Island (Places to visit · 1 to 3 days) — The island is long and narrow, with flat paths and a short distance from airport to beach. Heat is the main strain. Boat transfers need a step down onto a jetty or boat, which some older travellers find difficult, so ask about assistance in advance.
  • Bangaram Island (Places to visit · 1 to 3 days) — Flat sand and coral, with short distances. Transfer by boat from Agatti can involve stepping onto jetties and small boats; the helicopter option avoids this if available. There are few facilities beyond the resort.
  • Kadmat Island (Places to visit · 2 to 4 days) — Flat ground and a small village, with few steps. The long boat transfer from Agatti can be tiring and is weather dependent, so older travellers should ask about boat type, sea conditions and assistance at the jetty.
  • Kalpeni Lagoon (Places to visit · Half a day to 2 days) — Flat, short walks, with water-edge access that may involve wading or a boat. Facilities are basic, with only a few beds on the island.
  • Kavaratti Island (Places to visit · 2 to 3 days) — The island is flat and small, so distances are short, and there are no hills or steep stairs on the main walks. Heat and humidity are the real strain, so keep walks to early morning and late afternoon. Facilities are basic by mainland standards, so carry any regular medicines.
  • Kavaratti Marine Aquarium (Culture and craft · 45 to 60 minutes) — Short, flat walk from the mosque, with indoor shade. Exhibits are viewed at standing level, and seating is limited, so older visitors should take it slowly.
  • Minicoy Villages and Lava Dance (Culture and craft · Half a day) — Village lanes are flat and shaded by palms, with short walks. Performances may be held in the evening, with seating varying. Heat and humidity are the main strain.
  • Thinnakara Island (Places to visit · 1 to 3 days) — Flat sand with short distances. The boat transfer from Agatti is the main challenge, so ask the resort about boat type, jetty access and help for older guests.
  • Ujra Mosque (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The site is on level ground and a short walk from the main lanes. You will need to remove footwear, which can be hot underfoot in the afternoon, so go early. Seating inside is limited, so older visitors should plan a short stay.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Dolphin Dive Centre, Kavaratti (Sports · Half a day for an introductory session) — Diving is physically demanding and not suitable for everyone, particularly those with heart, lung or ear problems. Older travellers who are fit can ask about medical requirements, but most will prefer snorkelling or a glass-bottom boat.

Practical tips for Lakshadweep

  • Permit. Apply online at the official portal at least 14 days before travel, list every island including transit islands, and carry the approved permit. Up to six applicants can share one application. The portal has announced a move to a new platform around mid-October 2026, so check the current site.
  • Weather. The monsoon from roughly mid-May to mid-September brings rough seas outside the lagoons. Travel in October to March and keep spare days for delays.
  • Heat and humidity. Daytime highs sit near 30 degrees all year, with high humidity. Carry sun protection, wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water.
  • Dress and conduct. Most residents are Muslim. Dress modestly in settlements and mosques, ask before photographing people, and avoid public displays of affection.
  • Getting around. Between islands you will use boats or helicopters, and on islands you walk or cycle. Your operator will normally arrange transfers; confirm them in advance.
  • Money. Carry cash for small purchases, because ATMs and digital payments are limited outside the main islands. Resorts usually accept cards, but confirm first.
  • Reef care. Do not touch or stand on coral and do not collect shells, coral or turtle products. Use reef-safe sun protection.
  • Medical. Bring regular medicines and a prescription. Facilities on the smaller islands are basic, and serious cases are sent to the mainland.
