Why it matters

Why Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Ngengpui was notified in the 1990s to protect a stretch of forest near the Myanmar and Bangladesh borders. It is named after the Ngengpui river and covers about 110 sq km at heights from roughly 200 to 1,200 m, which gives it a range of habitats.

It is known for gaur, sambar, barking deer, clouded leopard, a small population of Indian elephants, and birds such as the Bhutan peacock-pheasant, white-cheeked partridge and great hornbill. Seeing it respectfully supports forest protection in one of Mizoram's least visited districts.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start by contacting the Mizoram Forest Department or the Lawngtlai district office, because no booking system or timings are published. The sanctuary lies about 40 km from town, so arrange a car with a driver who knows the roads and plan a full day.

The forest is virgin subtropical evergreen and semi-evergreen. It is best watched slowly: sit quietly, listen for hornbills, and scan for gaur, sambar and barking deer, which are among the animals recorded. Elephants, clouded leopards and primates are also reported, but sightings are rare and no guarantee can be given. Seven villages surround the sanctuary, so ask a local guide to take you along village paths and to explain what the forest means to them.

Carry water, snacks and rain gear, and be back on the main road before dusk, since lighting is poor and the roads are winding.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Contact the forest department before you go
