Why it matters
Why Phawngpui National Park (Blue Mountain) is worth your time
Phawngpui, also called the Blue Mountain because of the haze that gives it a blue look from a distance, is the highest peak in Mizoram at 2,157 m. The park, set up in 1992, covers about 50 sq km and holds some of the state's rarest wildlife, including Blyth's tragopan and Mrs Hume's pheasant, the state bird of Mizoram.
It is also a fragile place. District officials report that wild orchids have been stolen, and conservation efforts are underway. Visiting responsibly, with local permission and guidance, supports the village communities that look after the mountain and the first Rhododendron Festival held at nearby Sentetfiang in March 2018.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan Phawngpui as an expedition rather than a day out. Lawngtlai is one of the most remote districts of Mizoram, and the mountain lies far to its south and east. The district site lists the Lawngtlai bus stop at about 150 km from the mountain, and other sources give figures up to 165 km or more, so ask the forest department and your driver for the current route. Hire a sturdy vehicle with a driver who knows the hill roads, carry cash and medicines, and allow at least two days.
Visits are permitted only from November to April, when the Government of Mizoram allows eco-friendly visits. Obtain the permit first; the national tourism site names the Forest Department office in Saiha. Ask whether guides, camping and basic lodging at the foot of the mountain are available this season, and whether Sundays are closed.
On the mountain, look for goral on the western cliffs known as Thlazuang Khàm, birds and butterflies in the Farpak grassland, and orchids and rhododendrons on the slopes. Stay on the paths, do not collect plants, and keep noise low. Weather changes quickly and mist can hide the views, so start early and carry rain gear.
