Lawngtlai is a small town in southern Mizoram and the headquarters of Lawngtlai district, about 296 km by road from Aizawl. It stands in the Lai homeland: the Lai people, also called Pawi or Hakha Chin, founded the town in 1880 under the chief Haihmunga Hlawncheu, and the name means seized boat in Lai, after a boat taken as it drifted down the Kaladan river.
This is one of the most remote districts in the state, with a population of about 118,000 in 2011. The Lai Autonomous District Council sits at Lawngtlai, and the Chakma Autonomous District Council covers the Chawngte area, where Buddhism is the main religion. Lai, Chakma, Bawm and Pang communities share the district, each with their own dances and festivals.
The reasons to come are in the forest. Phawngpui National Park, around Mizoram's highest peak at 2,157 m, can be visited only between November and April. Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary lies about 40 km from town, and Sinemon and Lohawka are further sanctuaries listed by the district. Most of these have no published facilities, so plan with the forest department.
Expect a long journey. There is no commercial airport; a helicopter service links the town with Aizawl, and road journeys from Aizawl take 10 to 12 hours. Go for the dry season, keep time in hand, and treat Lawngtlai as a base for slow, quiet days rather than a checklist of sights.
