Lohajung is a small village at about 2,300 m in the Dewal block of Chamoli district, where the road up the Pindar valley ends and the trails to Roopkund, Bedni Bugyal and Brahmatal begin. It sits on a forested saddle with a view of Nanda Ghunti, and in winter it is often under snow. Folklore says the goddess Parvati fought the demon Lohasur here, which is how the village got its name.

Most people come for one of two treks. The Brahmatal trek, four days on foot from Lohajung, climbs through oak and rhododendron forest past Bekaltal to a ridge at about 3,800 m and runs right through the winter. The Roopkund trek is longer and much harder, crossing the Ali and Bedni meadows to the 5,020 m glacial lake known for its human skeletons. Overnight camping on these meadows was banned by the Uttarakhand High Court in 2018. Trek operators report that a Supreme Court order of 20 July 2026 set the ban aside; this is not yet confirmed from an official source, and permits and other conservation rules still apply.

The valley is also the heart of the Nanda Devi Raj Jat, the great pilgrimage that passes Wan and Bedni Bugyal on its way to Homkund. The Latu Devta temple at Wan, about 15 km by road, opens once a year and is one of the few sacred sites near Lohajung that older visitors can reach easily.

Lohajung is remote. It is a full day's drive from Kathgodam or Dehradun, has only homestays and simple guesthouses, and has no hospital. It suits trekkers and the families who travel with them. Older parents who are not trekking can enjoy a quiet base with views, a jeep trip to Wan and a gentler overnight in Gwaldam on the way.

Choose without overthinking

Which Lohajung experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Brahmatal or Roopkund?

Brahmatal for a first Himalayan trek or a winter snow trip: it is shorter, lower (about 3,800 m) and runs through winter. Roopkund only for experienced, very fit trekkers: it is longer and climbs to about 5,020 m.

Base in Lohajung or Gwaldam?

Lohajung if you are trekking or want to be close to Wan. Gwaldam if you are older or want milder weather and an easier drive; it is lower and on the main road from Kumaon.

Winter or autumn?

Winter for snow on the Brahmatal trail, but nights are very cold. October and November for clear views and more comfortable temperatures.

Wan route or Didna route to Bedni Bugyal?

Wan is shorter but steeper, climbing to Bedni in one day. The Didna and Ali Bugyal route is longer but gentler and gives more time on the meadows.

Know before you go

Lohajung travel tips

  1. 01

    Roads

The final roads up the Pindar valley are narrow and prone to landslides, especially in July and August. Drive in daylight and allow extra time.

  2. 02

    Permits

Forest permits are required for Roopkund, Bedni Bugyal and Brahmatal and are usually arranged by registered operators. Rules changed in July 2026; confirm the current position before booking.

  3. 03

    Cold

Lohajung is at about 2,300 m. From December to February nights are below freezing and homestay rooms are often unheated.

  4. 04

    Health

There is no hospital in the village. Carry medicines, and anyone with heart or lung conditions should take medical advice before going to this altitude.

  5. 05

    Money

Carry enough cash for homestays, jeeps and tips; do not rely on ATMs or card machines in the valley.

  6. 06

    Connectivity

Mobile signal and power can be patchy, particularly in winter. Tell family your plans before you leave the main roads.

  7. 07

    Respect

The bugyals and Wan are sacred to the Nanda Devi tradition. Do not pick flowers, play loud music or leave waste on the meadows.

  8. 08

    Gear

Bring boots, warm layers and rain gear with you; Lohajung's shops sell only basics.

Lohajung with elderly parents: what to know

  • Break the journey at Gwaldam or Karnaprayag rather than driving to Lohajung in a single day.
  • Lohajung is at about 2,300 m and very cold from December to February; bring thermal layers and a hot-water bottle.
