How to reach Lohajung by air
Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun (DED) is the usual airport, about 290 km by road and a full day's drive. Pantnagar (PGH) is the Kumaon-side alternative, also a long day away.
How to reach Lohajung by train
Kathgodam (KGM) is about 200 km away via Almora or Kausani and Gwaldam. Rishikesh is about 250 km away via Karnaprayag and Tharali. Both are full-day drives on mountain roads.
How to reach Lohajung by road
From Kumaon, the road runs via Gwaldam and Tharali up the Pindar valley through Dewal to Lohajung. From Rishikesh, it follows the Badrinath highway to Karnaprayag, then turns up the Pindar valley. Shared jeeps run from Kathgodam and Karnaprayag, but a hired car is more comfortable. Landslides are common in the monsoon.
Getting around Lohajung
Lohajung is small enough to walk. Local jeeps run to Wan (about 45 minutes) and Didna. For everything else, arrange transport through your homestay or trek operator.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Lohajung
- Break the journey at Gwaldam or Karnaprayag rather than driving to Lohajung in a single day.
- There is no hospital in the village; carry all medicines and know where the nearest health centre is before you go.
- Avoid July and August, when landslides frequently close the approach roads.
- Arrange a car with a driver who knows the Pindar valley roads.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
