Area by area

Lombok neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Kuta and the south coast

Best for: Beaches, newer hotels and quick airport access

Good to know: Kuta is about 20 minutes from the airport and close to Tanjung Aan, Merese and Selong Belanak. It is the most popular base now, but medical facilities are distant, so older travellers should check insurance and hotel support.

  2. 02

    Senggigi

Best for: Convenience, sunsets and proximity to Mataram

Good to know: The older resort strip on the west coast is closer to Mataram's hospitals, Narmada and Lingsar. Hotels are older and range widely; ask about lifts and ground-floor rooms. The airport is over an hour away.

Sights in this area: Pura Batu Bolong

  3. 03

    Mataram

Best for: Heritage sights, local life and medical access

Good to know: The provincial capital has hospitals, markets and the Hubbul Wathan Islamic Center, but fewer resort-style hotels. It is a practical base for a heritage-focused visit and for onward trips.

Sights in this area: Pura Lingsar, Senggigi Beach, Taman Mayura, Taman Narmada

  4. 04

    Senaru and the north

Best for: Rinjani, waterfalls and quiet nature stays

Good to know: Small guesthouses near the foot of Rinjani suit trekkers and nature lovers. Facilities are simple and the area is far from hospitals, so it is not an ideal base for frail travellers.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
