Plan 01
1 day in Lothal
- 01
Day 1: Harappan port and a lake or old town
Leave Ahmedabad early to reach the site as it opens, ideally by about 9 am in the cool season. Walk the excavated town in order: the dockyard basin first, then the acropolis platform and warehouse mounds, the lower-town street, the bead workshop, the drains and wells, and the burial ground at the far edge. Visit the Archaeological Museum afterwards, as it is shaded and has seals, beads and pottery. Note the museum is closed on Fridays. Have lunch on the road back, and stop at Malav Lake in Dholka if there is time.

Pacing
Pacing a Lothal trip for parents and children
- Go in the first two hours of the day. The site is open ground with very little shade, and the brick radiates heat by late morning even in winter.
- Wear closed, grippy shoes. The paths are flat but the brick edges, drains and stepped platforms are uneven in places.
- Carry a hat, water and an umbrella for shade. Benches and shelter are limited, so build in rest stops at the museum, which is out of the sun.
- Ask your driver to park as close as the entrance rules allow, and walk the site in one direction without retracing steps.
- Check the museum days before you leave: it is closed on Fridays, and a Friday visit may mean you can only see the exterior.
- Avoid the monsoon months if mobility is a concern; the ground can be slippery and the road in can be affected by heavy rain.
