Area by area

Lothal neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Ahmedabad (city centre or Ashram Road side)

Best for: Almost every visitor, as the practical base for Lothal

Good to know: Ahmedabad has the airport, main railway station, hospitals and a full range of hotels. Lothal is about 85 km away, so it is a day trip. Pick a hotel that suits the rest of your Ahmedabad plans and ask the front desk for a trusted cab driver.

Sights in this area: Lothal Archaeological Site, Malav Lake, Dholka, Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary, National Maritime Heritage Complex

  2. 02

Near the airport or SG Highway, Ahmedabad

Best for: Late arrivals and travellers heading straight out of the city

Good to know: Useful for short stops around flights and for easy road access out towards the Dholka and Bagodara roads. It is further from the old city, so only choose it if you are not spending much time there.

  3. 03

    Dholka town

Best for: Travellers who want a basic overnight halt close to the site

Good to know: Dholka is a working taluka town, closer to Lothal than Ahmedabad, but accommodation is limited and simple. Check recent reviews and confirm availability before relying on it, particularly if travelling with elders.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
