Mahabubnagar, officially Mahbubnagar and once known as Palamooru, is the headquarters of its district in southern Telangana. It lies on the Deccan plateau at about 498 m, roughly 98 km from Hyderabad and 130 km from Kurnool, and was renamed in 1890 after the sixth Nizam, Mir Mahbub Ali Khan.

The district has been ruled in turn by the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas and the Qutb Shahis of Golconda before becoming part of Hyderabad State. That layering shows in the sights: a ruined fort on a granite hillock in the town centre, the Qutb Shahi hill fort at Koilkonda with seven gates, and temples moved to higher ground when the Srisailam reservoir flooded the Krishna valley.

The best known sight is the Pillalamarri banyan tree, described as about 800 years old, a short drive from the centre. Beyond town, Koilsagar reservoir and the Manyamkonda hill temple make easy half-day outings.

This is not a resort destination. It suits a day trip from Hyderabad or a calm overnight stop for travellers going on to Kurnool or Alampur, with short, mostly flat sights, honest rural facilities and few crowds.

Food to try in Mahabubnagar

Food and restaurants

Mahabubnagar eats Telangana-style: rice with dal, chutneys and spicy curries, jowar rotis in villages, and biryani and meat curries in non-vegetarian places. Named long-running restaurants are not documented here, so ask your hotel for a busy, clean place near the bus station and order the local thali. Hotels near the bus stand and railway station serve simple lunches, and roadside stalls on the highway sell tea, snacks and fruit. In villages near Koilkonda and Devarakadra, eating options are limited, so carry water and a packed lunch for day trips.

Shopping in Mahabubnagar

Shopping

Shopping is practical rather than touristy: the town bazaar covers daily needs. For crafts, the district is not strongly associated with one, so most travellers buy nothing beyond snacks and basics. Narayanpet silk saris from a neighbouring district are a well-known Telangana textile.

Mahabubnagar fort or Koilkonda?

The town fort is a quick roadside stop; Koilkonda is a full excursion with seven gates and an inscription.

Koilsagar or Manyamkonda for a half-day?

Koilsagar is scenery; Manyamkonda is a temple. They are close, so many travellers do both.
