Plan 01

1 day in Mahabubnagar

  1. 01

Day 1: Banyan, fort and hill fort

Start at Pillalamarri in the morning, then visit the fort on the hillock in town. After lunch and a rest, drive to Koilkonda Fort about 28 km away and climb only as far as comfort allows.

Koilkonda Fort2-3 hoursDemandingEarly morning, November to February

Pace: Koilkonda Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Koilkonda Fort: The fort sits on a hilltop and the approach involves crossing streams or a canyon and then a long flight of steps. There is no handrail or seating that is documented. Older travellers and anyone with knee trouble can enjoy the lower gates and the setting without going to the top.

Plan 02

2 days in Mahabubnagar

  1. 01

    Day 1: Town sights

Pillalamarri banyan and its museum, then Mahabubnagar fort, with an afternoon rest.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Mahabubnagar Fort (Palamooru Fort)30-45 minutesModerateMorning or late afternoon

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Mahabubnagar Fort (Palamooru Fort): Vehicles can reportedly reach most of the way up, followed by a short walk over uneven rock. There is no shade, seating or toilets documented, so keep it short in warm weather.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Koilkonda and Devarakadra

Early climb at Koilkonda, then Koilsagar reservoir and the Manyamkonda hill temple.

Pacing

Pacing a Mahabubnagar trip for parents and children

  • Do Koilkonda early and only as far as comfort allows; the steps are long and unshaded.
  • Pillalamarri and the town fort are the easiest sights; start there.
  • Carry water and snacks; facilities outside town are basic.
  • Avoid April and May; the heat is intense.
  • Hire a car for the district; local buses are slow and infrequent.
  • Check whether Pillalamarri is fully open before going.
