Before you go
Mahabubnagar with elderly parents: what to know
- Do Koilkonda early and only as far as comfort allows; the steps are long and unshaded.
- Pillalamarri and the town fort are the easiest sights; start there.
- Carry water and snacks; facilities outside town are basic.
- Avoid April and May; the heat is intense.
- Hire a car for the district; local buses are slow and infrequent.
- Check whether Pillalamarri is fully open before going.

- Pillalamarri Banyan Tree (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Paths in the complex are largely level and shaded by the tree itself, with benches in places. It is one of the easiest outings in the district for older visitors, subject to what is open.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Mahabubnagar Fort (Palamooru Fort) (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes) — Vehicles can reportedly reach most of the way up, followed by a short walk over uneven rock. There is no shade, seating or toilets documented, so keep it short in warm weather.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Koilkonda Fort (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — The fort sits on a hilltop and the approach involves crossing streams or a canyon and then a long flight of steps.
