Maihar is a small town in Baghelkhand, in eastern Madhya Pradesh, between Katni and Satna on the main Howrah-Prayagraj-Mumbai rail line. It is known first as a pilgrimage town. On Trikut hill above it stands the Maa Sharda temple, one of the sites counted among the Shakti Peeths, where the goddess is worshipped as Sharda and linked to Saraswati. Local tradition says the name comes from a legend that Sati's necklace fell here.

The temple sits at the top of a stairway of more than a thousand steps, and most visitors now take the ropeway or the vehicle road instead. The rhythm of a visit is set by darshan: early-morning aarti, queues that swell at weekends and in Navratri, and a calmer afternoon. Folk tradition adds the warrior brothers Alha and Udal, who are said to have found the shrine and are honoured at a pond and shrines on the hill's far side.

Maihar is also a music town. In 1918 the sarod player Allauddin Khan settled here as court musician to the Maharaja, founded the Maihar band and taught the students who made the Maihar gharana famous, among them Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, Annapurna Devi and Nikhil Banerjee. His house, Madina Bhavan, is preserved as a memorial, and the band still rehearses in town.

For families and older travellers, Maihar works as a one-night stop with a clear plan: temple in the early morning by ropeway, a rest, then the music sites in the cooler hours. Facilities are modest, hotels are simple and timings published online often disagree, so confirm locally and book ahead for festivals.

What and where to eat in Maihar.

Food to try in Maihar

Food and restaurants

Food in Maihar is simple, mostly vegetarian and built around the pilgrim day: chaat, samosa, jalebi and sweets from small shops. Wikivoyage lists Vicky Chaat Center at Ghantaghar for panipuri and tikiya chaat, Seema Restaurant for samosa and khoya jalebi, Venus Sweets for pav bhaji and Vandana Sweets for gulab jamun. Shops change, so confirm they are open before planning around any of them.

For older travellers, choose hot, freshly cooked items and sit in a sweet shop instead of eating on the pavement. Wikivoyage also reports that alcohol sales are banned locally, and badam and kaju shakes near Alauddin Square are listed as available outside the winter months. Bottled water is the safest choice.

Shopping in Maihar

Shopping · 1 guide

Shopping in Maihar is about the pilgrimage. Stalls at the foot of Trikut hill sell prasad, puja items, small idols and home decor, and Katra Bazaar and Ghantaghar in town cover everyday goods, sweets and namkeen. This is not a craft centre, so do not expect emporiums.

Prices are generally not fixed, so ask first and compare two stalls. For prasad, buy from established counters near the stairs and ropeway. Indore Sev Bhandar at Ghantaghar is listed for namkeen that travels well on a train.

Choose without overthinking

Which Maihar experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Stairs, vehicle road or ropeway to the Sharda temple?

Take the stairs only if you are fit and want the full pilgrim climb; it is over a thousand steps. The vehicle road and ropeway suit older travellers and small children, and the ropeway takes about five minutes but may involve its own queue.

Early-morning aarti or a quiet weekday afternoon?

Early morning has the strongest devotional atmosphere and cooler air, but it needs an early start and a night near the temple. A weekday afternoon is easier on energy and queues, at the cost of less atmosphere. Confirm timings locally either way.

Madina Bhavan or the Maihar band, if you only have time for one?

Pick the band if you want to hear music; it is a morning rehearsal, so timing matters. Pick Madina Bhavan for history and quiet: it is a house and tomb, easy to fit in at any hour, though opening arrangements are not widely published.

Art Ichol or Bharhut as an extra half-day?

Art Ichol is closer, about 8 km, and offers sculpture, a working project and stays. Bharhut suits archaeology enthusiasts but shows mostly foundations, as the carved railings are in museums.

Maihar travel tips

  1. 01

    Timings disagree

Published darshan, aarti and ropeway hours differ between sources and may change on festival days. Confirm with your hotel or at the counter the evening before.

  2. 02

    Crowds

Navratri and New Year's Day are described as the busiest times, and queues can run for hours. Weekday mornings outside festivals are far easier.

  3. 03

    Dress and footwear

Dress modestly for the temple and expect to remove footwear. Carry something light to cover shoulders and legs, and check whether phones or cameras are allowed inside.

  4. 04

    Heat and season

April to June is very hot, with daytime highs around 39 to 42 C at nearby Satna. The monsoon makes the stairs slippery. November to February is the comfortable window.

  5. 05

    Getting around

Autos, shared autos and cycle rickshaws cover town, and Wikivoyage lists a station-to-temple auto fare of roughly 20 rupees per person, which may have risen. Hire a car for Art Ichol and Bharhut.

  6. 06

    Ropeway

The ropeway runs in daytime only, and a lunch break is reported. Fares have been revised in recent years, so confirm the current price at the counter.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry cash in small notes for stalls, autos and prasad, and keep valuables minimal at the temple. Cash machines are in the town centre but not on the hill.

  8. 08

    Photography and etiquette

Ask before photographing people, the band's rehearsal or the tomb at Madina Bhavan. Rules inside the temple vary, so follow signs and staff instructions.

Maihar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Take the ropeway or vehicle road to the temple. The stairway has more than a thousand steps and is hard on knees, especially going down.
  • Avoid Navratri, New Year's Day and weekends if you cannot manage a long queue; a quiet weekday morning is far easier.
