Why it matters
Why Chamkati Mosque is worth your time
The Chamkati Mosque is a useful example of the single-domed square mosque form in Bengal. Banglapedia notes that its design may derive from the Eklakhi Mausoleum, which makes it a link between Pandua and Gaur architecture.
Its date and patron are uncertain. Banglapedia says Cunningham tied it to an inscription of 1475, other sources give a different date, so dates here are approximate. The name Chamkati refers to a community whose descendants live near Old Malda.

How to experience it
Look at the building from outside first. It is a compact square brick mosque with one large hemispherical dome, five entrances on three sides and a groin-vaulted verandah on the east. Glazed tile borders survive on some panels and add colour.
Inside, eight stone pillars at the corners carry arches and squinches so the hall stays square. The single mihrab in the west wall has floral motifs and chain-and-bell patterns. Sit for a minute under the dome, which is a calm space even on a hot day.
Some local accounts say bats once filled the building, which is one explanation of the name Chika. The Gumti Gate is reached through this mosque's grounds, according to one visitor account, and Tantipara Mosque is next on the usual route.
