The short answer

Dakhil Darwaza: what visitors should know first

Yes, it is the visual signature of Gaur. Spend 20–30 minutes, photograph the arch from the road first, then walk through. It is level and shaded in patches, and fits neatly with Firoz Minar, about a kilometre away.

History and context

The story behind Dakhil Darwaza

Wikipedia notes scholars disagree on the patron and date: one view dates it to 1425 under Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah, another points to the Husain Shahi period and a 1519 inscription naming Nusrat Shah. It is likely to have linked the citadel with the Baro Sona Mosque.

The gateway is largely brick with stone facing on the piers. It remains a protected Monument of National Importance under the ASI.

Why it matters

Why Dakhil Darwaza is worth your time

Dakhil Darwaza was the main northern entrance to the citadel of Lakhnauti, the sultans' capital at Gaur. It is also called Salami Darwaza, and it was clearly meant to impress arriving visitors.

Its date is debated. Some scholars favour the 15th century, while others point to an inscription of 1519 naming Sultan Nusrat Shah. Either way, it shows how the Bengal Sultanate used monumental gateways to project power, and it helps explain why Gaur is still a major heritage site.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start by looking at the gateway from the approach, where the whole length and arch profile are visible. Then walk the central passage, about four and a half metres wide, flanked by guardrooms, and look up at the vaulted roof. The red brick and stone-faced piers make the details easy to read, and the corner turrets are ruined but still give the outline.

The gate is large: Wikipedia gives its length at about 102 metres and its main arch at over ten metres high, so allow a few minutes just to walk around. Look for traces of terracotta ornament and the contrast between brick and stone facing, which links it stylistically to nearby Gaur mosques.

Use it as the start of a Gaur loop. Firoz Minar is about a kilometre away, and the Baro Sona Masjid lies roughly a kilometre to the northeast. A car and driver are the easiest way to join the stops, since the monuments are spread across fields and villages.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
