Plan 01

1 day in Malvan

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, town and sea walk

Reach Malvan jetty early for the ferry to Sindhudurg Fort, allowing about two hours on the island and a clear return time with the boatman. Back on the mainland, have a fish thali in the town and rest through the hot early afternoon. In the later afternoon, browse the market for kokum products and sweets, then walk the Rock Garden seafront or the beach at Chivla for sunset, with a look at the evening boat activity at the jetty.

Sindhudurg FortAbout 2 hours on the island, plus the crossingModerateEarly morning or late afternoon, November to February when the sea is calm

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Sindhudurg Fort: The ferry needs a step down into a small boat and the fort paths are uneven laterite with steps and almost no shade or seating. Older visitors usually manage the main lane and the temple, and skip the ramparts.

Plan 02

2 days in Malvan

  1. 01

Day 1: Sindhudurg Fort and the seafront

Take the first ferry you can to Sindhudurg Fort and walk the paths to the Shivaji temple and the ramparts at your own pace. Return for a Malvani thali and a rest. In the late afternoon, visit the market and the town beach at Dandi, where fishing boats are drawn up, then end at the Rock Garden for the sunset.

Day 2: Rajkot Fort, Chivla and Dhamapur

Start at the Rajkot Fort hill and the large statue of Shivaji while the light is soft. Walk down to Chivla beach for the fishing boats and a slow coffee, then have lunch. Drive inland to Dhamapur lake in the afternoon for the Bhagwati temple, the lakeside walk and, if running, a short boat trip. Return to Malvan for dinner.

Plan 03

3 days in Malvan

  1. 01

    Day 1: Sindhudurg Fort

Take the early ferry to the fort, explore the lanes inside and the ramparts, and plan to leave before midday. Have a fish thali in town, rest, and spend the evening at the market and the jetty.

Day 2: Rajkot, the sea and the seafront

Visit Rajkot Fort and the statue in the morning, then Chivla and the Rock Garden. After lunch, ask at the jetty whether an operator is running a boat trip in the Malvan Marine Sanctuary, which can include snorkelling or dolphin watching in season. Keep the evening open for Dandi beach and the boats coming in.

Pacing

Pacing a Malvan trip for parents and children

  • Plan the fort for the first ferry or the late afternoon and avoid midday. Boarding a boat means a short, uneven step down at the jetty and sea conditions can change quickly, so go only if you are steady and tell the boatman about mobility needs.
  • Inside Sindhudurg Fort the paths are uneven laterite stone with some steps, and there is almost no shade or seating. Take a hat, water and closed shoes with grip, and skip the ramparts if you are unsteady.
  • Choose a stay with ground-floor rooms and easy car access; Malvan's old lanes are narrow and a few lodges have steps and no lift.
  • Do not swim at the Rock Garden or at other rocky stretches; the sea is rough there. Use patrolled or locally recommended beach stretches and follow the boatmen's and fishermen's advice.
  • Keep a rest hour after lunch. Humidity is high even in the dry months and the walk-and-eat rhythm of the day is easy to overdo.
  • Hire a car for Dhamapur and Anganewadi; public transport inland is limited, and the lake and the temple are better visited early in the day.
