Area by area

Malvan neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

Malvan town (near the jetty and market)

Best for: Travellers who want restaurants, the ferry and the market within a short ride

Good to know: Convenient for the early fort ferry and for evenings in town. The trade-offs are narrow lanes, scarce parking and limited lift access in older lodges, so ask about ground-floor rooms.

Sights in this area: Chivla Beach, Dandi Beach and Malvan Jetty, Rajkot Fort and Shivaji Statue

  2. 02

    Chivla and Dandi beachfront

Best for: Families who want a sea view and a quiet base close to town

Good to know: Small resorts and homestays sit a few minutes from the jetty and give an easier evening at the beach. Check the walking distance to the nearest restaurant and whether the access road is practical at night.

  3. 03

    Tarkarli and Devbag (next door)

Best for: Beach holidays, water sports and backwater boat trips

Good to know: About 7–8 km south of Malvan, with the largest choice of homestays and resorts. A good base if you want a quieter stay and will make day trips into Malvan for the fort; see the separate Tarkarli guide.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
