Day 1: Fort and cathedral from Hyderabad
Leave Hyderabad early so you reach Medak Fort at opening time, before the heat builds. Climb to the upper ramparts for the view, then drive into town for lunch near the cathedral. Spend the afternoon at Medak Cathedral, which is level and cool inside. If time remains, drive to Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary, but check its entry arrangements first, and aim to be back on the road to Hyderabad before dusk.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Medak Fort 1.5–2 hours Demanding Early morning, November to February Medak Cathedral 45 minutes to 1 hour Easy Morning or late afternoon; avoid service times Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary 2–3 hours Moderate Early morning, November to February Pace: Medak Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Medak Fort: The route up is a long stone stairway and then uneven ramparts with little shade or seating. Older visitors may be happier seeing the gateways and lower sections, then enjoying the view from partway up.
With parents at Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary: The trail is about 4 km with a watchtower halfway along, and there is little shade or seating. Older visitors can do part of the trail, or enjoy the lake edge and wait near the entrance.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Medak trip for parents and children
- Start the fort early and be prepared for a steep stair climb; older visitors can enjoy the lower gateways and leave the upper ramparts.
- The cathedral is level and largely shaded, so it is a good place for a rest in the afternoon heat.
- Hire a car for the full day. It gives you a cool place to rest between sights and handles the rural roads to Pocharam and Edupayala.
- Avoid April and May, when mean daily highs reach about 40 degrees Celsius, and expect heavy rain in July and August.
- Carry water, snacks and any medicines, as facilities at the sanctuaries are limited.
- Check Edupayala conditions in the monsoon; the temple has been reported closed when the Manjira floods.
