Why it matters
Why Kurangani to Sambalaru Trek is worth your time
Kurangani is remembered for the forest fire of 11 March 2018, when two groups of trekkers were caught by fire on the hill slopes and 23 people died. A government inquiry blamed poor preparation by the forest department and the lack of any system to regulate trekking groups, and recommended set routes, trained guides and controlled eco-tourism.
Tamil Nadu closed forest trekking afterwards and reopened it in 2024 through Trek Tamil Nadu, with booked routes, forest department guides and insurance. This short Kurangani walk is one of those routes. Respect the rules, especially around fire: no smoking, no fires, and turn back if you see smoke.

How to experience it
Report at the Kurangani trek reception point for the early start (7 am at the time of writing). Kurangani is about 18 km from Bodinayakkanur, the nearest railway station, and lies on a separate road from Megamalai, so plan it as its own half-day trip in Theni district.
The route is 2.5 km each way through wild pasture and shola patches, past small waterfalls and the Kottakudi river, to Sambalaru falls. A watchtower on the way gives views of the Kolukkumalai hilltop and nearby peaks. The highest point is only about 988 m (3,241 ft), so the day can be warm by late morning.
Carry water and a sun hat, wear shoes with grip for the stream banks, and do not bathe in the falls; bathing is not allowed on Trek Tamil Nadu routes.
