Megamalai, also spelled Meghamalai and known as the High Wavy Mountains, is a range in the Western Ghats in Theni district of Tamil Nadu. Its name is usually read as cloud mountain. The hilltop settlement of Highwavys sits at about 1,500 m, reached by a British-era road with eighteen hairpin bends from the foothills.

The forests here were combined with the Srivilliputhur sanctuary in 2021 to form the Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve, covering about 1,017 sq km, and they protect the source of the Vaigai river. Tea, coffee and pepper estates occupy the upper slopes, and elephants, gaur and large birds live in the forest around them.

This is not a polished hill station. Services on the hill are limited to forest lodges and panchayat rest houses, access is described as restricted in parts, and travel is discouraged in June and July. What it offers is quiet, cool air and long views over the Cumbum valley.

Below the hills, Suruli Falls near Cumbum and two small temples give an easier outing. Most visitors base themselves in Theni, Chinnamanur or Cumbum and treat Megamalai as a long day, or two, with older travellers needing to plan for the winding road.

What and where to eat in Megamalai.

Food to try in Megamalai

Food and restaurants

The hill itself offers almost no restaurants, so carry a packed meal and water. Theni, Chinnamanur and Cumbum have simple Tamil meals, tiffin items such as idli and dosa, and tea stalls. Eat before the climb and stock up on snacks. Plan lunch in Cumbum or Theni on the way back, where family-run places serve Tamil meals on banana leaf, and keep a flask of tea for the hill.

Shopping in Megamalai

Shopping

There is little shopping on the hill itself. Tea, coffee and spices from the estates may be sold through local shops in Theni or Cumbum; ask for what is genuinely grown locally and buy from established stalls. Spices and cardamom from the Cumbum valley are widely sold, but buy from established shops and ask what is local.

Choose Highwavys for cool air and views, if you can manage a long winding road. Choose Suruli Falls for an easier, shorter outing near Cumbum.
