Before you go

Megamalai with elderly parents: what to know

  • Take motion-sickness medication before the hairpin climb.
  • Start early so you are back before dusk.
  • Carry water, food, warm layers and your regular medicines.
  • Confirm access arrangements before you leave, as parts are restricted.
  • Avoid June and July when travel to the hill is discouraged.
  • Use handrails at Suruli Falls; the stone is slippery.

Easiest first

Places in Megamalai sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Highwavys Tea Estates and Lakes (Places to visit · 2 to 4 hours on the hill; a full day including the climb) — Walking is mostly along the road and the reservoir edge, which is gentle. The long hairpin road can cause motion sickness, and facilities are minimal. Dress in layers and carry medicines.
  • Thousand Lingam Shrine, Suruli (Places of worship · 20 to 40 minutes) — Mostly level, with some uneven ground. Seating is limited, and floors can be hot at midday. Go early.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Kurangani to Sambalaru Trek (Places to visit · About 3 hours on the trail; a half day including the drive) — This is a short walk of 2.5 km each way with a modest climb, and the forest department rates it easy. Active older travellers who are steady on uneven ground can manage it with rests; those who are not can wait at Kurangani village while the family walks. The longer Kurangani routes to Top Station or Kolukkumalai are not suitable for older travellers.
  • Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day from Theni; two days if you stay on the hill) — The mountain road has numerous hairpin bends, and facilities on the hilltop are limited to forest lodges and panchayat rest houses. Walking is on uneven estate and forest tracks with little seating. Carry water, medicines and warm layers.
  • Suruli Falls (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The approach includes steps and an uneven footpath to the pool, and the stone is slippery in the wet. Showers and a changing area are reported near the falls. Go in the morning and use handrails.
  • Suruli Velappar Temple (Places of worship · 30 to 60 minutes) — The temple is reached on foot and the approach has steps and uneven ground. There are few seats, and cave interiors can be slippery and dim. Take time and use a stick if needed.

Practical tips for Megamalai

  • Access. Parts of the hill are restricted. Ask the Theni forest division or the range office about permission before you go.
  • Season. Avoid June and July when travel to the hill is discouraged. October to March is the most comfortable.
  • The road. The climb has many hairpin bends. Take motion-sickness remedies and avoid driving after dark.
  • Food and water. Services on the hill are minimal. Carry meals, water and a first-aid kit.
  • Warm layers. Mist and cool air at about 1,500 m can surprise visitors from the plains.
  • Wildlife safety. Elephants use the forest edges. Stay in the vehicle and keep distance.
  • Lodging. Forest lodges must be booked through the forest department well ahead; otherwise stay in Theni, Chinnamanur or Cumbum.
