Why it matters
Why Suruli Falls is worth your time
Suruli Falls is the most accessible piece of the Megamalai landscape: the river that feeds it rises in the hills above. It is a reminder that the plains below depend on the forest above, and the falls give visitors a simple way to see that connection.
The falls also have a cultural history: the Tamil epic Silappathikaram refers to the falls, and several rock-cut caves nearby are dated to around the 11th century.

How to experience it
Reach Suruli Falls from Cumbum by road; buses run from Cumbum and Uthamapalayam. From the car park a footpath leads to the main pool. The upper fall drops about 46 m, and a second 12 m drop follows after a pool, giving a total of roughly 58 m.
Go in the morning, when the forest is quiet and cooler. From June to October the flow is strongest and the roar can be heard from the path. Outside that season there is still some water, though less. Barriers and rails may limit access when the flow is heavy; follow local advice.
Elephants, spotted deer and gaur are reported near the falls around dawn and dusk, so do not linger on the track after dark. Combine with the Suruli Velappar temple and the Thousand Lingam shrine, both close by.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
