Before you go

Mirzapur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Treat the waterfalls as separate expeditions. Wyndham Fall and Tanda Fall are the gentlest, with short walks from the road, while Lakhaniya Dari involves two to three kilometres each way over rock.
  • Avoid the pools. Rocks at the falls are slippery in the monsoon, and Lakhaniya Dari is reported to be very deep, with drownings most years. Stay behind the viewing points.
  • Carry water, snacks and any medicines for the whole day. Food near the falls is very limited, and there is little shade or seating.
  • Hire a taxi with a driver for the day rather than relying on autos. It gives you a place to rest and means you are not stranded when light fades.
  • Ghat steps are uneven and can be wet or slippery by the river. Go in the morning or late afternoon and take a stick or a helping arm.
  • In July to September the roads to the falls can be slow or waterlogged; build in extra time and check conditions with your hotel the evening before.

Easiest first

Places in Mirzapur sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Brass Workshops at Basnai Bazar and Badli Katra (Shopping · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Short walks in busy, narrow lanes with uneven surfaces and little seating. Go with a rickshaw to the door and a companion; noise from hammering can be loud.
  • Mirzapur Clock Tower (Ghantaghar) (Places to visit · 15 to 20 minutes) — It is viewed from street level with no steps, but traffic and crowds around it can be heavy and there is little seating. Take a rickshaw to the door and view from the pavement.
  • Mirzapur Handmade Dari and Carpet Workshops (Shopping · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly seated visits in small workshops, though lanes can be narrow and floors uneven. Arrange a car to the door and ask for a chair.

Some walking — plan a break (5)

  • Bariya Ghat (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — Steps are uneven and may be wet near the water, with little seating or shade. Stay on the upper levels and go with an arm to hold.
  • Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · A full day from Mirzapur; more if you stay near Robertsganj) — Travel is mostly by vehicle on long forest and hill roads, which may be rough and tiring. Shade and facilities are limited and the nearest comforts are in towns, so older or frail travellers should keep to short, assisted stops.
  • Pakka Ghat (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — The broad stone steps are uneven in places and can be wet or slippery near the water, with little seating or shade. Go with a helping arm and keep to the upper levels if balance is a concern.
  • Tanda Fall (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Viewing is straightforward from the road side, but the rocks are slippery in the monsoon and there is little seating, shade or food. Choose dry daylight hours and wear shoes with grip.
  • Wyndham Fall (Vindham Falls) (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours, plus 30 to 40 minutes' travel each way) — The approach is by road and the viewing areas are fairly close, but rock surfaces are slippery in the rains and seating, shade and facilities are limited. Wear shoes with grip and carry water.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)

  • Lakhaniya Dari (Places to visit · Most of a day, including travel; the walk in takes about 1.5 hours) — The trail runs 2 to 3 km from the entry gate over large rocks, streams and jungle, with no seating or facilities. It is not suitable for elderly travellers or anyone with limited mobility.
  • Siddhnath ki Dari (Places to visit · Half a day including travel) — The approach involves a walk through dense forest on uneven, slippery ground with no seating or facilities. It is not recommended for travellers with limited mobility or stamina.

Practical tips for Mirzapur

  • Heat. April to June is very hot, with average highs above 38 degrees in the nearby Varanasi record. Keep outdoor sightseeing to the first few hours of the day and rest through the afternoon.
  • Monsoon safety. From July to September the falls are at their best, but rocks are slippery and pools are deep. Stay behind the viewing areas, do not bathe in the pools and avoid trails in or after heavy rain.
  • Getting around. Cycle rickshaws handle town trips, and autos serve short hops. A hired taxi is the practical way to reach the waterfalls, which lie roughly 15 to 45 km from the city. Agree the price and the return time before you leave.
  • Food and water. Catering near the falls is very limited, so carry water, fruit and dry snacks for the whole outing. In town, choose busy, freshly cooked places and drink only sealed water.
  • Money. Carry enough cash for taxis, entry tickets and small purchases, as card acceptance outside hotels and larger shops is patchy. Check for an ATM in town before you head to the falls.
  • Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at the ghats and any temples. Wear shoes with grip for the falls and ghat steps, and keep sandals for the town.
  • Daylight. Plan to leave the falls well before dusk. The approach roads are rural and unlit, and the trail to Lakhaniya Dari is lonely, so go in a group.
  • Photography. Photography at the ghats and waterfalls is normally fine. Be discreet near people bathing or performing rituals, and ask before photographing workers at looms or brass workshops.
